NFR is accelerating efforts to launch electric train services between Tripura and Assam, with Electric MEMU trial runs underway across Agartala, Dharmanagar, Sabroom and Karimganj routes. The electrification project aims to improve rail connectivity, boost regional development, and integrate Tripura with India’s nationwide electrified railway network.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has stepped up preparations to introduce electric train services between Tripura and Assam, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of railway infrastructure in the northeastern region. Railway officials said that extensive trial operations are currently underway, with the aim of launching regular electric passenger train services at the earliest.
As part of the preparations, newly introduced Electric Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) passenger trains are being operated on a trial basis across several routes connecting Tripura and southern Assam. These services are running between Agartala and Dharmanagar in North Tripura, Agartala and Sabroom in South Tripura, as well as routes extending towards Karimganj in Assam.
According to a senior NFR official, six to eight-coach Electric MEMU trains are presently being tested on various sections of the railway network. The trial operations are intended to evaluate the performance and reliability of the newly installed railway electrification infrastructure before full-scale passenger services are introduced.
Railway engineers and technical teams are closely monitoring several operational parameters during the trials. Particular attention is being given to the voltage levels of overhead electric lines, the efficiency of power transmission systems, and the overall functioning of railway equipment associated with electric train operations.
Officials said that after all technical inspections are completed and satisfactory reports are received from the concerned departments, the railway authorities will take a final decision regarding the commencement of regular electric train services on these routes.
The move comes after the successful completion of electrification work across Tripura’s entire railway network. Earlier, Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) had achieved 100 percent electrification of the state’s 271-kilometre railway corridor.
The completion of electrification marks another chapter in the state’s railway development journey. Rail connectivity first reached Dharmanagar in North Tripura in 1964. However, it took another 44 years before the railway network was extended to Agartala, the state capital, in 2008. The rail line was subsequently expanded further south to Sabroom in 2019, significantly improving transportation facilities within the state.
Nath had also highlighted the transformation of Tripura’s railway infrastructure over the past decade. He noted that the broad-gauge conversion project was completed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014. Before the conversion, railway services in Tripura operated on metre-gauge tracks, limiting connectivity and operational efficiency.
The minister further pointed out that the international railway link connecting Agartala in Tripura with Akhaura in Bangladesh was completed in 2023. The cross-border railway project is expected to enhance trade, tourism and regional economic cooperation between India and Bangladesh while strengthening connectivity in the Northeast.
The broad-gauge railway network stretching from Churaibari, located on the Tripura-Assam border, to Sabroom near the India-Bangladesh border now covers approximately 271 kilometres. According to the state government, all major development and expansion works associated with the railway network were completed within seven years.
Simultaneously, railway infrastructure modernization is progressing under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Redevelopment projects are currently underway at four important railway stations in Tripura — Agartala, Udaipur, Kumarghat and Dharmanagar. The projects aim to improve passenger amenities, station facilities and overall travel experience.
Officials noted that Tripura’s railway network has witnessed substantial growth in recent years. More than 19 trains currently operate from the state, connecting passengers to major cities across the country, including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Firozpur and Patna.
In another important development, railway authorities recently conducted successful trial runs of passenger trains hauled by electric locomotives between Agartala railway station and Arunachal Junction railway station in Assam’s Cachar district. These tests are considered mandatory before the launch of regular electric train operations.
Railway officials indicated that additional trial runs are likely to be conducted in the coming weeks to ensure the safety, reliability and efficiency of the electrified railway network. The results of these trials will play a crucial role in determining the final timeline for the launch of commercial electric passenger services.
Before the passenger train trials, the first electric locomotive-powered goods train successfully operated between Badarpur station in southern Assam and Jirania station in Tripura, located about 15 kilometres north of Agartala. The successful freight operation demonstrated the readiness of the electrified railway corridor for regular services.
The introduction of electric trains is expected to bring multiple benefits, including reduced fuel costs, lower carbon emissions, faster acceleration, improved operational efficiency and enhanced passenger comfort. It will also align Tripura with the broader national railway electrification initiative being implemented across India.
Meanwhile, NFR is also exploring plans to extend the services of the prestigious Vande Bharat Express trains to Silchar in Assam and Agartala in Tripura in the coming months. Such a move would significantly improve high-speed rail connectivity in the Northeast and provide passengers with faster and more comfortable travel options.

Currently, all passenger trains operating in Tripura are powered by diesel locomotives. To facilitate the transition to electric rail operations, the Centre launched a Rs 46-crore railway electrification project in 2022. With electrification work nearing completion and trial operations progressing successfully, Tripura is now poised to enter a new era of modern, efficient and environmentally sustainable railway transportation.
The launch of electric train services between Tripura and Assam is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, support economic growth and further integrate the northeastern state with India’s rapidly expanding electrified railway network.
