Mizoram CM Lalduhoma flagged off 219 new police vehicles under the ASUMP Scheme, reaffirming the government’s commitment to police modernisation. The initiative will strengthen law and order, improve policing capabilities across 44 police stations, enhance mobility, and support modern infrastructure and equipment development statewide.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday flagged off 219 new police vehicles and reiterated his government’s commitment to modernising the state police force to improve policing services and strengthen law and order across Mizoram.

The flagging-off ceremony was held at the parade ground of the 3rd Battalion of the Mizoram Armed Police at Mualpui in Aizawl. The newly procured vehicles are expected to significantly enhance the mobility and operational efficiency of the police department, enabling officers to respond more effectively to emergencies and public safety requirements.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Lalduhoma said that the state government has been making sustained efforts to modernise the police force and provide it with the resources necessary to meet contemporary policing challenges. He noted that the addition of new vehicles would strengthen policing infrastructure and improve service delivery across all districts of the state.

The Chief Minister stated that the vehicles were procured under the Assistance to States and Union Territories for Modernisation of Police (ASUMP) Scheme. According to him, a total of 219 vehicles have been sanctioned under the programme, although some units are yet to arrive.

He informed that all 44 police stations in Mizoram would receive at least one new vehicle, ensuring improved transportation facilities for law enforcement personnel. In addition, 15 police outposts across the state will benefit through the redistribution of existing vehicles, thereby extending the impact of the initiative to remote and underserved areas.

Apart from police stations and outposts, the new vehicles will also be allocated to Mizoram Armed Police battalions, specialised police units, and police training schools. The allocation is expected to strengthen operational readiness, training activities, and specialised law enforcement functions.

Highlighting the financial aspects of the programme, Lalduhoma said Mizoram received Rs 44.53 crore under the ASUMP Scheme, including the state’s contribution. Out of this amount, Rs 30.45 crore was utilised for procuring the vehicles. The remaining funds have been invested in acquiring modern policing equipment and developing essential infrastructure for the police department.

The Chief Minister pointed out that procurement of vehicles under the Police Modernisation Scheme had not been permitted since 2017, creating transportation-related difficulties for police personnel. As a result, many police units faced operational challenges due to inadequate mobility and aging vehicle fleets.

He credited the restoration of vehicle procurement approval to the persistent efforts of the state government and Mizoram Police, particularly the office of the Director General of Police. Lalduhoma further noted that Mizoram had been unable to benefit from the scheme since 2021 because of technical issues, making the revival of the programme a significant achievement for his administration.

Urging officials to ensure proper maintenance of the newly acquired vehicles, the Chief Minister said that their longevity and effectiveness would depend on responsible usage and upkeep. He expressed confidence that the vehicles would serve the police department efficiently for many years.

Addressing the gathering, Director General of Police Sharad Agarwal described the initiative as a major step towards strengthening the police force and enhancing its operational capabilities. He said the objective was not merely to add vehicles but to improve the overall effectiveness of policing and equip personnel to meet the evolving demands of modern law enforcement.
