The Special NDPS Court in Khowai sentenced Dipankar Das to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a Rs 50,000 fine in a drug trafficking case. The verdict under the NDPS Act is being hailed as a major success in Tripura’s anti-narcotics campaign and crackdown on illegal drug networks.

The Special NDPS Court in Khowai district has sentenced a convicted drug offender to five years of rigorous imprisonment, reinforcing the state’s commitment to eliminating illegal drug activities and trafficking networks.

The court found Dipankar Das, a resident of Lalchhara, guilty under Section 21(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, in connection with a narcotics case registered in December 2023. Along with the prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convicted individual. In the event of non-payment of the fine, Das will be required to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment.

According to official sources, the case originated after law enforcement authorities recovered narcotic substances from the accused during an operation conducted in December 2023. Following the seizure, police registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to gather evidence and establish the facts surrounding the offence.

After completing the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet before the court earlier this year. During the trial, the prosecution presented witnesses and documentary evidence supporting the charges. Upon examining the evidence and hearing the arguments, the Special NDPS Court concluded that the prosecution had successfully proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and subsequently convicted the accused.

Law enforcement officials welcomed the verdict, describing it as an important achievement in the state’s intensified campaign against drug trafficking and narcotics-related offences. Officials stated that the judgment demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts by investigative agencies and the judiciary in ensuring that offenders are held accountable under the law.

Authorities further noted that the conviction sends a strong warning to individuals involved in the illegal drug trade and underscores the government’s determination to dismantle narcotics networks operating within the state. They emphasized that strict legal action against offenders remains a key component of Tripura’s strategy to curb the spread of drugs and protect communities from the harmful effects of narcotics.
