AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder has pledged swift restoration of abandoned ponds across the city, emphasizing environmental conservation, ecological balance, water resource management, and public welfare. During an inspection of a historic pond renovation in Ward No. 11, he stressed faster project completion to create greener, healthier community spaces.
Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder has reaffirmed the civic body’s commitment to restoring neglected water bodies across the city, describing pond conservation as a vital step toward environmental sustainability, ecological balance, and improved public welfare.
On Saturday, the Mayor visited Ward No. 11 near Abhoynagar market to inspect the ongoing renovation work of a historic pond that had remained abandoned for nearly six decades. During the inspection, he reviewed the progress and quality of the restoration project and directed contractors and municipal officials to expedite the work while maintaining high standards.
Speaking to officials and local residents during the visit, Majumder emphasized that the restoration of ponds is not merely a beautification initiative but a crucial environmental responsibility. He stated that water bodies play a significant role in maintaining ecological balance, replenishing groundwater resources, and providing cleaner surroundings for communities.
“Preserving water bodies is not just about beautification; it is about safeguarding our environment and ensuring facilities for citizens. Every pond we restore is a step toward a greener, healthier Agartala,” the Mayor said.
The inspection was attended by Mayor-in-Council member Hiralal Debnath, Councillor Sampa Sen Sarkar, and other representatives of the Agartala Municipal Corporation. The civic leaders reiterated their commitment to conserving existing reservoirs and transforming neglected ponds into accessible public assets that benefit local residents.
According to municipal officials, the pond restoration initiative forms part of a broader urban development strategy aimed at improving environmental conditions, addressing water management challenges, and enhancing the city’s overall landscape. The renovated water bodies are expected to contribute to groundwater recharge, reduce pollution-related concerns, and create cleaner community spaces.
Residents of the area have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism about the long-term benefits of restoring water bodies that had been neglected for decades. Many believe that revived ponds will not only improve the aesthetic appeal of neighborhoods but also help tackle emerging issues related to water scarcity and environmental degradation.
The restoration project reflects AMC’s growing focus on sustainable urban development and environmental conservation. As renovation work progresses, city authorities remain hopeful that the successful revival of abandoned ponds will encourage greater community participation in preserving natural resources and maintaining a cleaner, greener Agartala for future generations.
