On Wednesday, police detained two students from Kailasahar College for allegedly assaulting the college principal in public. The incident stemmed from an occurrence on March 4 during the 5th-semester examination at the college. Kishan Debnath, a candidate from the 5th semester, was caught using his mobile phone to cheat on his papers. Subsequently, the professors overseeing the examination confiscated his phone but allowed him to continue the exam.
After the examination concluded, Debnath reportedly went to the college office to retrieve his mobile phone and allegedly hurled abusive language at both male and female professors. The college principal, Dr. Pinaki Pal, intervened and informed the police about the incident. Debnath left after the situation was resolved.
However, tensions escalated later that evening when Dr. Pal was passing through Kailasahar Hawkers’ corner on his way home. Debnath, accompanied by another student named Abhijit Sarkar and other students, allegedly blocked Dr. Pal’s path and verbally abused him in public.
In response to the incident, Dr. Pal lodged a complaint with the Kailasahar police station on March 5 against Debnath and Sarkar. However, the police initially refrained from taking legal action against the accused students. It wasn’t until March 12 that the police registered cases against the duo and detained them from their homes on the night of March 13. They were subsequently produced before the court on Thursday for further proceedings.
