The Tripura government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) on Friday to establish a world-class five-star hotel at the historic Pushpabanta Palace in Kunjaban. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced the development during a press conference.
“We had been in discussions with IHCL for a long time, and today, on the auspicious occasion of Holi, we have finalized the agreement,” said CM Saha.
The upcoming hotel, named Taj Pushpabanta Palace, will be developed by the Taj Group at an estimated cost of ₹250 crore. The project aims to showcase the rich heritage of the Manikya dynasty on a global platform. The luxury hotel will feature 104 rooms, including four exclusive suites designed to reflect the lifestyle of the Manikya kings.
State Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and Industries & Commerce Minister Shantana Chakma were also present during the announcement.
However, the Tipra Motha party, an ally of the ruling BJP, had initially opposed the decision to convert the palace into a hotel. Addressing concerns, CM Saha stated, “With any major project, challenges arise, but we will resolve them through discussions.” He confirmed that the government would engage with Tipra Motha leaders to address their reservations.
Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya, Pushpabanta Palace served as a royal studio and guesthouse. The upcoming Taj Pushpabanta Palace is expected to boost tourism in Tripura, drawing international visitors and preserving the state’s royal legacy.
