In Sri Lanka, a new 5-megawatt solar power plant was officially inaugurated in Hiripitiya by Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody. Developed by local energy firm, which is a subsidiary of Pan Asian Power Pvt. Ltd., the facility spans 20 acres and is expected to generate 10 gigawatt hours of clean energy annually.
The ground-mounted solar installation will contribute significantly to the national grid and is estimated to save approximately USD 3.3 million – or around 1 billion Sri Lankan rupees-in foreign exchange by reducing diesel imports.
Minister Jayakody, speaking at the inauguration, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining state ownership in the energy sector while promoting private sector participation in renewables.
