Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee files nomination in Dharmanagar by-poll with massive rally, signaling strong political momentum ahead of April 9 voting amid triangular contest involving BJP and CPI(M), drawing statewide attention in Tripura politics.
In a dramatic political development ahead of the crucial by-election, Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee filed his nomination for the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly constituency on Monday, accompanied by an overwhelming show of public support that turned the town into a sea of party colors.
The high-energy rally commenced around 11 a.m. from the District Congress Bhavan in Dharmanagar, drawing thousands of party workers, supporters, and local residents. The massive procession moved through key roads of the town, with participants waving party flags, raising slogans, and expressing solidarity with the Congress candidate. The sheer size of the gathering led to significant traffic disruptions, effectively bringing parts of the town to a standstill.
At the forefront of the rally was Bhattacharjee himself, who led supporters with visible confidence and enthusiasm. The procession culminated at the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Returning Officer, Debyani Choudhury, where he formally submitted his nomination papers.

Speaking to the media after completing the nomination process, Bhattacharjee exuded optimism about the upcoming election. He asserted that the people of Dharmanagar are eager for change and would support the Congress in its mission to ensure development, safeguard democratic values, and protect citizens’ rights. He also emphasized that the overwhelming turnout at the rally reflects growing public trust in the party.
Political analysts view the rally as a calculated and powerful show of strength by the Congress, aiming to reestablish its influence in a constituency that has recently drawn significant political attention. The by-election was necessitated following the demise of veteran leader Biswa Bandhu Sen, making the contest both emotionally and politically charged.
The April 9 by-poll is shaping up to be a closely watched triangular battle. The ruling party has fielded Jahar Chakraborty from the Bharatiya Janata Party, while the Left has nominated Amitabha Dutta from the Communist Party of India (Marxist). With all three major political forces in the fray, the Dharmanagar seat has become a focal point of political discourse across the state.
Observers noted that Monday’s “flood-like” turnout could inject fresh momentum into the Congress campaign. However, they caution that while such rallies demonstrate organizational strength and public enthusiasm, the ultimate outcome will depend on voter turnout and ballot performance on election day.
