In a move towards improving urban water infrastructure, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Friday laid the foundation stone for a ₹530 crore water supply project under the Mukhyamantri Nagar Unnayan Prakalp (MM-NUP) at Rajarshi Town Hall, Udaipur. This ambitious project, spanning 12 towns, is financially supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and is expected to benefit approximately 4 lakh residents.
The project aims to provide 100% drinking water coverage in urban areas, a continuation of the government’s successful Jal Jeevan Mission initiative in rural regions. Speaking at the event, Dr. Saha emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring clean drinking water for all households. “After achieving our goals in rural areas, our mission is now to cover every urban household,” the Chief Minister said.
The ADB-funded project, projected to be completed within three years, will establish 305 kilometers of pipeline, 25 deep tube wells, 18 iron removal plants, four water treatment plants, and 19 overhead reservoirs. Along with improving water supply, the project will address urban infrastructure by constructing 18 kilometers of roads and 48 kilometers of drainage systems.
Dr. Saha lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for development, highlighting the central government’s support. “Prime Minister Modi’s leadership has accelerated development in Tripura. This water project is part of building ‘Ek Tripura, Shrestha Tripura’ under his guidance,” he stated. He also appreciated the Urban Development Department’s efforts, acknowledging that robust infrastructure is essential for progress.
The towns set to benefit from the project include Khowai, Mohanpur, Ranirbazar, Bishramganj, Melaghar, Udaipur, Amarpur, Belonia, Kumarghat, Dharmanagar, Kailashahar, and Ambassa.
Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Urban Development Secretary Abhishek Singh, and other dignitaries were present at the event. Representatives from 11 urban panchayats participated virtually, underlining the collaborative nature of the initiative.
With this project, the government aims to drastically improve water supply in urban areas, ensuring safe and clean drinking water for thousands of households, while simultaneously enhancing urban infrastructure. The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Modi, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and the ADB for their financial and technical assistance, emphasizing the government’s focus on rapid urban development.
