The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police arrested Milan Sardar, a Trinamool Congress councillor from Barasat Municipality, for allegedly orchestrating the abduction of a Tripura-based businessman. The arrest took place late Thursday night, following a series of investigations and the detention of Sardar’s associates.
Sardar, representing ward number 33 in Barasat Municipality, was named the mastermind behind the abduction, which occurred in early September. The businessman, whose identity remains undisclosed, had been visiting a relative in Sodepur, North 24 Parganas, when he was kidnapped at gunpoint from a garage.
The victim was initially held at a farmhouse in Barasat and later moved to a residential flat in the same area. The CID took over the investigation, leading to a raid that resulted in the businessman’s rescue and the arrest of six accomplices involved in the abduction. Under interrogation, the suspects revealed that Sardar had not only planned the crime but also arranged for the locations where the victim was held captive.
After being on the run for several days, Sardar was finally apprehended in Barasat on Thursday night. Acting on a tip-off, CID officials conducted a surprise raid at his residence, where he was arrested. He is expected to appear in court on Friday.
Following the arrest, Trinamool Congress leadership swiftly distanced itself from Sardar. Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, a four-time Lok Sabha member from Barasat and the party’s district president, announced Sardar’s immediate expulsion from the party. “We will not tolerate such activities at any cost,” she stated.
