BSF initiates process to hand over bodies of two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers killed in firing near Tripura’s Sepahijala border amid rising tension and intensified surveillance along the India-Bangladesh International Border against cross-border smuggling and infiltration activities.

Fresh tension gripped the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura’s Sepahijala district after two suspected Bangladeshi smugglers were killed during firing by Border Security Force personnel near the Zero Point area, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Authorities said the Tripura Frontier of the Border Security Force has already initiated the process to hand over the bodies of the deceased to Bangladesh authorities following completion of legal formalities and post-mortem examinations.

The deceased were identified as Nabir Hussain, 40, and Md. Mursalin, 22. According to senior police officials, the incident occurred late on Friday night during a routine patrol operation along the international border in Sepahijala district.

Officials stated that BSF jawans noticed a group of suspected Bangladeshi smugglers allegedly attempting to smuggle fish fingerlings from the Indian side into Bangladesh through the unfenced stretch near the Zero Point area. The troops reportedly challenged the group and repeatedly warned them against continuing the illegal activity.

According to the official version, the smugglers ignored repeated warnings and allegedly began pelting stones and bricks at the BSF personnel. The situation soon turned tense, forcing the jawans to take defensive measures.

“When the crowd became aggressive and uncontrollable, the troops fired a few rounds from Pump Action Guns in self-defence,” a senior official said. The firing reportedly injured the two alleged smugglers, who were immediately shifted to nearby government hospitals for treatment.

However, both later succumbed to their injuries while undergoing medical treatment, officials added.

After completion of post-mortem procedures, the bodies were kept in the hospital mortuary before the process of handing them over to Bangladeshi authorities was formally initiated.

The incident has once again drawn attention to persistent cross-border smuggling activities in Tripura’s vulnerable border belts. Local sources alleged that an organised smuggling network involved in trafficking fish fry and other goods has been operating actively in several areas of Sepahijala district.

Some residents alleged that the network is allegedly controlled by a local operator identified as Suman from the Miyapara area. However, officials have not yet confirmed these allegations.

The Sonamura, Kamalasagar and adjoining border areas of Sepahijala district have remained sensitive zones for years due to frequent incidents of cross-border smuggling. Illegal trade involving narcotics, fish fry, garments, stolen motorcycles and other goods has repeatedly posed security challenges for law enforcement agencies.

Tripura shares an 856-kilometre-long international border with Bangladesh and is surrounded on three sides by the neighbouring country, making the northeastern state highly vulnerable to infiltration, smuggling and other trans-border crimes.

Security officials said fencing has been completed across most stretches of the border, except in a few difficult terrains and riverine pockets. Surveillance has also been significantly intensified in recent months.

A BSF official stated that border domination and monitoring activities were strengthened further after political unrest and violence erupted in Bangladesh during June and July 2024, particularly following the fall of the former government led by Sheikh Hasina on August 5 last year.

Officials said security agencies remain on high alert along the International Border to prevent illegal infiltration, smuggling and anti-national activities while maintaining peace in the sensitive frontier regions.
