Lok Sabha MP Biplab Deb highlights the historic power of Vande Mataram, praising its 200-year legacy of sacrifice during a parliamentary discussion marking the 150th anniversary of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s national song and its importance for India’s younger generation.
Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday said that the phrase Vande Mataram encapsulates nearly 200 years of India’s sacrifice and struggle for freedom, emphasising its enduring emotional and historical significance. He was participating in a special parliamentary discussion on the 150th anniversary of the national song, an event organised as part of the government’s year-long commemoration of the iconic creation of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.
During the discussion, Deb underscored that Vande Mataram was not just a slogan but a powerful expression of patriotic spirit that inspired countless freedom fighters. “Vande Mataram is a phrase which itself speaks and describes the history of sacrifice,” he said. He noted that many revolutionaries who raised this slogan during the independence movement faced severe repercussions from the British colonial regime. Numerous freedom fighters, he reminded the House, were imprisoned, tortured, or even executed for chanting Vande Mataram as part of their resistance.
Deb also expressed his deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his initiative to celebrate 150 years of Vande Mataram at the national level. He said such celebrations hold immense importance for today’s youth, who must be connected with the struggles and sacrifices that shaped modern India. “It is crucial for the younger generation to understand the emotional strength of this slogan and the history behind our freedom,” Deb added.
The parliamentary discussion, titled “Discussion on the 150th Anniversary of National Song Vande Mataram,” reflects the government’s broader effort to revisit, preserve, and promote India’s cultural and historical heritage. The initiative includes nationwide programmes aimed at highlighting the relevance of Vande Mataram in contemporary India, as well as its role in unifying people across diverse regions during the freedom struggle.
