Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma signals major BJP ticket overhaul ahead of Assembly polls, prioritizing youth, women, and winnability. NDA seat-sharing finalised as party eyes anti-incumbency strategy and historic mandate in crucial elections.
In a political development ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday indicated that several sitting legislators of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may be denied party tickets. The move is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the party’s electoral prospects by introducing new candidates, including a stronger representation of women and youth.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Sarma revealed that the BJP is set to contest 89 out of the 126 Assembly constituencies in the state. As part of the seat-sharing arrangement within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), 26 seats will be allocated to its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), while 11 seats will go to the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
The Chief Minister confirmed that the BJP’s candidate list is likely to be announced on Wednesday following crucial deliberations by the party’s central election committee in the national capital. The announcement is expected to set the tone for the party’s campaign as it gears up for a high-stakes electoral battle.
Highlighting the rationale behind the expected denial of tickets to some sitting MLAs, Sarma stated that the party has conducted an extensive review of the performance of its legislators. “In several constituencies, we have decided to introduce new candidates. There will be a conscious effort to ensure adequate representation of women and youth,” he said.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the selection process has been guided by multiple factors, including feedback from grassroots workers, organizational priorities, and the overall winnability of candidates. This indicates a clear shift towards performance-based evaluation rather than relying solely on incumbency.
Party insiders suggest that the decision to drop certain sitting MLAs is aimed at countering anti-incumbency sentiments, which often pose a challenge for ruling parties seeking re-election. By bringing in fresh faces, the BJP hopes to inject renewed energy into its campaign and strengthen its appeal among voters.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP had emerged as the single largest party in Assam and successfully formed the government with support from its allies, including AGP and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). Since then, the party has focused on consolidating its governance record while preparing for another electoral test.
With the upcoming elections expected to be fiercely contested, the BJP leadership appears determined to strike a balance between experience and renewal. The inclusion of younger candidates and women is also seen as part of a broader effort to align with changing voter expectations and demographic shifts.
