Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to review India-B’desh border security in Tripura, assessing BSF preparedness, infiltration challenges, smuggling, and border management. During his visit, Shah will inspect border locations, attend security meetings, and discuss smart fencing initiatives aimed at strengthening surveillance and national security.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to conduct a comprehensive review of the prevailing security situation along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura on Friday, with a special focus on border management, infiltration, smuggling, and the preparedness of the Border Security Force (BSF) and other security agencies.
Shah arrived in Agartala on Thursday evening from Shillong after attending the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Meghalaya. His visit to Tripura is expected to include a series of high-level meetings and field inspections aimed at strengthening national security and enhancing surveillance mechanisms along the sensitive international border shared with Bangladesh.
Senior officials said the Union Home Minister will hold detailed discussions with top officers of the BSF, state police, intelligence agencies, and civil administration regarding the current security environment and emerging challenges along the Indo-Bangla border. The review is expected to focus on issues such as illegal infiltration, cross-border smuggling, drug trafficking, illicit trade, and other trans-border crimes.
Upon his arrival at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala, Shah was received by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, BJP Tripura President Abhishek Debroy, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Director General of Police Anurag, BSF Tripura Frontier Inspector General A.K. Chakrabarty, and other senior officials.
Officials indicated that after the Home Minister’s review meeting, security and surveillance measures along the Bangladesh border are likely to be further intensified. Enhanced vigilance is expected in border villages and habitations located near the fencing on both sides of the international boundary.
As part of his itinerary, Shah is expected to visit selected locations along the international border in West Tripura district to obtain a firsthand assessment of the prevailing situation. The visit is aimed at evaluating operational readiness and understanding the challenges faced by security personnel deployed in border areas.
According to officials, the Home Minister will also visit a BSF Border Outpost (BoP) on the outskirts of Agartala. During the visit, he is scheduled to interact with BSF personnel, participate in a Sainik Sammelan, take part in a tree plantation drive, and lay foundation stones for various infrastructure development projects.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said the state government had earlier requested the Union Home Minister to personally visit the international border and assess the security scenario. He expressed confidence that Shah’s visit would help strengthen border management strategies and address long-standing concerns related to infiltration and cross-border crimes.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the Central Government’s initiatives to modernize border security through advanced technological interventions. He stated that Tripura would be among the states to benefit from the implementation of the Smart Border Project, which aims to enhance surveillance and monitoring capabilities through modern technologies.
Under the ambitious project, border security infrastructure will be strengthened using drones, radars, advanced surveillance cameras, sensors, and other cutting-edge technologies. Similar systems are also planned for Assam and West Bengal to improve the effectiveness of border management across eastern India.
Tripura shares an 856-kilometre-long international border with Bangladesh and remains one of the most strategically sensitive states in the Northeast. The state is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides, making it vulnerable to illegal migration, smuggling networks, narcotics trafficking, and other cross-border criminal activities.
Authorities have completed fencing along most stretches of the border, with only around 21 kilometres remaining unfenced due to difficult terrain and geographical challenges. The fencing has played a crucial role in curbing infiltration, smuggling, and the movement of anti-national elements. However, security agencies continue to face challenges in monitoring vulnerable stretches and preventing illegal activities.

A senior BSF official noted that vigilance along the international border has been significantly enhanced since political unrest erupted in Bangladesh during June and July 2024. Security forces intensified border domination measures following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, 2024, amid concerns over potential spillover effects and increased cross-border movements.
Last month, while addressing the BSF Investiture Ceremony and the Rustamji Memorial Lecture in New Delhi, Amit Shah reiterated the Narendra Modi government’s commitment to creating an impregnable border security network. He announced that the Smart Border Project would be implemented over the next year to strengthen India’s borders through technology-driven surveillance and rapid response systems.
