Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha says 86.50% of families receive regular piped drinking water, with full sanitation coverage and new treatment plants planned for Agartala to expand safe, treated water supply across the state by 2028.
Tripura has achieved significant progress in expanding access to safe drinking water, with 86.50 per cent of families in the state now receiving regular drinking water through pipeline connections, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha informed the State Legislative Assembly.
Replying to two separate questions raised by MLAs Jahar Chakraborty and Sudip Roy Barman, Dr Saha said that out of a total of 750,849 families across Tripura, 649,470 families have already been provided with piped drinking water connections.
The Chief Minister said the state government is working towards ensuring regular supplies of treated drinking water to households across both plain and hilly areas. According to him, the government expects that by December 2028, residents throughout Tripura will be able to receive treated drinking water directly at their homes through pipeline connections.
Dr Saha also highlighted the expansion of safe drinking water facilities in rural areas. During the last three years, a total of 191,106 rural families have been brought under the coverage of safe drinking water facilities, reflecting the government’s efforts to extend water infrastructure beyond urban centres.
Responding to a question concerning sanitation coverage, the Chief Minister said Tripura has 1,193 Gram Panchayats and Village Committees spread across 765 LGD-coded revenue villages. He stated that all Gram Panchayats and Village Committees in the state have achieved 100 per cent sanitation coverage.
The Chief Minister also provided an update on drinking water projects being implemented under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0. Replying to a question raised by MLA Jitendra Majumdar, Dr Saha said that 21,413 families have so far received drinking water connections under the project.
He further informed the Assembly that around 90 per cent of the AMRUT 2.0 project work has already been completed. The progress, he said, is part of the broader effort to strengthen urban water supply infrastructure and improve access to reliable drinking water.
In another significant development, the government has undertaken plans for the construction of two new water treatment plants to ensure a steady supply of purified drinking water in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area. Dr Saha provided the details while replying to a question raised by MLA Gopal Chandra Roy.
One of the proposed projects is a Ground Water Treatment Plant at Netaji Adarsha Siksha Mandir in Agartala. The facility will have a treatment capacity of 550 lakh litres per day. The Chief Minister said the project is expected to be completed by July 2027.
The second project is a Surface Water Treatment Plant at College Tilla in Agartala, with a proposed capacity of 641 lakh litres per day. Its completion is expected by January 2028.
Together, the two treatment plants are expected to strengthen the water supply infrastructure of the Agartala Municipal Corporation area and increase the availability of purified drinking water.

The government’s water supply initiatives, along with universal sanitation coverage across Gram Panchayats and Village Committees, indicate a continued focus on improving basic civic amenities in Tripura. With further pipeline expansion and major treatment projects scheduled for completion over the coming years, the state aims to extend reliable access to safe and treated drinking water to more households.
