Tripura BJP president Abhishek Debroy said the party had finalised its candidate list for upcoming civic elections and would announce nominees after the schedule is declared. The BJP core committee also discussed electoral roll revision and planned a protest on October 31.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura has completed preparations for the upcoming civic elections, including finalising its candidate list, state party president Abhishek Debroy said on Wednesday. He added that the names of the candidates would be announced after the election schedule is officially declared.
The announcement followed a meeting of the BJP’s state core committee at the official residence of Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha in Agartala. The meeting reviewed organisational preparations, upcoming programmes and the prevailing political situation in the country and the state.
Chief Minister Manik Saha also referred to the meeting in a public statement, saying that he had participated in the BJP Tripura Pradesh core committee meeting.

Debroy said the party had been preparing for the forthcoming civic polls and had completed the necessary organisational work. However, he did not disclose the names of the proposed candidates or provide details of the party’s election campaign, maintaining that the list would be announced at the appropriate time after the election schedule was declared.
The meeting was attended by several senior BJP leaders, including former Tripura Chief Minister and West Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb, state BJP president Abhishek Debroy, state in-charge Mriganka Deo Barman, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath.
BJP MP and Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra also attended the meeting. Former state BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, former Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik and other senior leaders were present.
Debroy said the core committee generally meets once a month to discuss organisational matters and political developments. The latest meeting came as the ruling party intensified its preparations for the upcoming municipal and other civic elections in Tripura.

Apart from election preparedness, the committee discussed the political debate surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Debroy criticised opposition parties for their campaign against the revision exercise, accusing them of misleading the public about its purpose.
Defending the SIR process, the BJP state president described electoral roll revision as a regular part of electoral administration. He referred to earlier revision exercises, including those conducted in 1995 and 2004, and questioned the opposition’s current objections to the process.
Debroy rejected allegations that the revision exercise was intended to provide an electoral advantage to the BJP. He maintained that the process should not be portrayed as a political measure designed to bring a particular party to power.
The BJP leader also accused opposition parties of attempting to create political instability and weaken democratic institutions. He alleged that their campaign against the SIR exercise was part of a broader effort to challenge the ruling establishment. These claims reflected the BJP’s political position, while opposition parties have raised concerns about the electoral roll revision process.

Debroy further announced that protests would be organised across Tripura on October 31 against what the BJP described as misleading claims about SIR. He said the proposed mobilisation would allow people to express their opposition to the campaign against the revision exercise.
The issue is expected to remain part of the state’s political debate as parties prepare for the upcoming civic elections.
