Tripura has set October 31, 2026, as the deadline to complete statewide healthcare digitalisation. The initiative includes paperless hospital services, wider ABHA adoption, digital health registries and integrated information management.
NHA CEO praises Agartala Civil Hospital’s paperless system; West Tripura to be developed as model digital health district
Tripura has set October 31 as the target for completing the digital transformation of its entire healthcare delivery system, with the government seeking to make health services more technology-driven, integrated and citizen-friendly.
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte announced the deadline on Tuesday at a workshop on the Integrated Health Information Management System (IHMIS) at Pragya Bhavan, where West Tripura district was formally launched as the state’s model district for digital health implementation.
National Health Authority (NHA) CEO Dr Sunil Kumar Barnwal, along with senior officials of the Centre and the state Health Department, attended the programme.
Dr Barnwal had visited Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Agartala Civil Hospital on Monday to assess its digital health infrastructure and the use of paperless systems in both the outpatient (OPD) and inpatient (IPD) departments. He also inspected the hospital’s “computer on wheels” facility, which enables doctors and healthcare personnel to record and access patients’ medical information digitally at the bedside.
Barnwal said he had seen similar systems in the United Kingdom but found the integrated paperless system at Agartala Civil Hospital particularly impressive.
“I have rarely seen such an advanced and integrated paperless healthcare system in India,” Barnwal said, adding that Tripura could set an example as a “model digital health state” if it successfully implements the initiative across the state.
He stressed the need to bring every citizen under the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) system and ensure that all healthcare facilities are registered in the Health Facility Registry and healthcare professionals in the Healthcare Professionals Registry.
Gitte said the Tripura Medical Council, Tripura Pharmacy Council, Tripura Nursing Council and Tripura Allied Health Council had already introduced online applications, digital payments and online issuance of certificates.
Pointing out that people were already accustomed to using digital services for banking, railway and air-ticket bookings, insurance premium payments and school admissions, the Health Secretary said healthcare services could similarly move rapidly from manual to digital systems.
“Time is now our biggest challenge. But our goal is clear and we are capable of completing the task,” Gitte said.
According to the Health Department, more than 3.2 million ABHA IDs have already been generated in Tripura, providing a substantial foundation for the state’s digital health infrastructure.
The meeting also highlighted the performance of the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Mukhyamantri Jan Arogya Yojana (CMJAY), which form key components of the state’s health protection system.
As of June 30, 2026, more than 1.66 million Ayushman cards had been issued under AB-PMJAY in Tripura. More than 570,000 beneficiaries had availed themselves of cashless treatment, while claims worth over Rs 307 crore had been settled by empanelled hospitals. As many as 9,283 beneficiaries had also received cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals outside the state.

Under CMJAY, more than 630,000 Ayushman cards have been issued. Over 92,000 beneficiaries have received cashless treatment, with claims exceeding Rs 50 crore settled. Another 2,218 beneficiaries have availed themselves of treatment at empanelled hospitals outside Tripura.
Four beneficiaries who had undergone major surgeries under the cashless treatment schemes also interacted with the dignitaries at the programme and expressed gratitude for receiving quality treatment without having to bear the treatment costs upfront.

The state government said the digital integration of healthcare services, combined with wider adoption of ABHA and digital health registries, would help create a more seamless health delivery system and position Tripura among the leading states in digital healthcare.
