Tripura Police intensified the hunt after seizing a Maruti Suzuki Baleno linked to the shocking assault on ASI Biplab Datta, who was dragged on a car bonnet in Agartala. Police may invoke attempt to murder charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Tripura Police have intensified their investigation into the shocking incident in which a traffic Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) was dragged for a considerable distance on the bonnet of a moving car while attempting to stop the vehicle. Investigators have successfully seized the Maruti Suzuki Baleno bearing registration number TR03M0775, believed to be involved in the incident, while efforts are underway to trace and arrest the absconding driver.
The incident occurred on Wednesday and sent shockwaves across the state after Traffic ASI Biplab Datta was reportedly carried on the bonnet of the speeding vehicle from Battala to the steel bridge over the Howrah River embankment. The dramatic episode has triggered widespread concern over the safety of traffic personnel carrying out their duties on busy roads.
According to police officials, the vehicle was traced through extensive analysis of CCTV footage collected from various locations along the route. Acting on the evidence, investigators located and seized the Baleno, marking a significant breakthrough in the case. However, the driver managed to evade arrest and remains at large.
On Thursday morning, IG (Law and Order) Monchak Ippar visited the West Agartala Police Station to review the progress of the investigation. During the visit, he instructed the investigating team to intensify the search operation and obtain detailed ownership records from the Transport Department to identify and locate the person driving the vehicle during the incident.
Speaking to reporters, the senior police officer described the assault as a heinous crime, stating that the act could be treated as an attempt to murder. He confirmed that once the accused is apprehended, appropriate provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) would be invoked based on the First Information Report (FIR) lodged by ASI Biplab Datta.
Police sources said multiple teams have been deployed to track the suspect, and raids are being conducted at various locations based on available leads. Officials expressed confidence that the accused would be arrested soon.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from both the police fraternity and the public, highlighting the growing risks faced by traffic personnel while enforcing road safety regulations. Senior officers acknowledged that frontline traffic police frequently encounter aggressive behaviour from motorists, making it essential to strengthen measures for their protection.
