Traffic ASI Biplab Datta was injured after being dragged on a car bonnet by a reckless driver in Agartala’s Battala area while attempting to stop the vehicle following a pedestrian hit-and-run. Police registered a case and launched a search for the absconding accused.

A traffic police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) sustained injuries after being dragged on the bonnet of a speeding car by a driver attempting to evade police in Agartala on Thursday. The dramatic incident occurred in the Battala area when traffic personnel tried to intercept a vehicle that had allegedly knocked down a pedestrian before attempting to flee the scene.

According to police officials, the incident unfolded during routine traffic monitoring when personnel noticed a four-wheeler driving recklessly. The vehicle was reportedly involved in an accident after hitting a pedestrian in the Battala area. Traffic police immediately signalled the driver to stop for questioning and verification.

However, the driver allegedly ignored repeated instructions from the traffic personnel and continued moving. As the situation escalated, Traffic ASI Biplab Datta stepped forward to intercept the vehicle personally. Officials said the driver initially slowed down, giving the impression that he intended to cooperate with the police.

As ASI Datta approached the vehicle to inspect the driver’s documents, the driver suddenly accelerated in an apparent attempt to escape. In an effort to protect himself from being run over, the officer jumped onto the bonnet of the moving vehicle. Instead of stopping, the driver continued speeding with the officer clinging to the bonnet.

Eyewitnesses, including fellow traffic personnel and local traders, attempted to stop the fleeing vehicle but were unsuccessful. The driver continued driving for a considerable distance before ASI Datta was eventually thrown off the bonnet near the Pratapgarh Steel Bridge, where police presence was relatively low.

The injured officer was immediately rescued by local people and police personnel before being shifted for medical treatment. Doctors confirmed that he suffered injuries to his waist and hands. His condition is reported to be stable, and he is receiving appropriate medical care.

Traffic DSP Dulal Datta confirmed that the vehicle had been intercepted after allegations that it had struck a pedestrian. He stated that the driver deliberately fled the scene while carrying the on-duty traffic ASI on the bonnet, putting the officer’s life at serious risk.

“The driver carried the on-duty traffic ASI on the bonnet of the vehicle and fled. The vehicle has been identified and a case has been registered. Investigation is underway, and efforts are on to arrest the accused,” the Traffic DSP said.

Police identified the vehicle as bearing registration number TR03N0775. The Traffic Department has lodged a formal complaint with the West Agartala Police Station, and a criminal case has been registered against the driver.

Officials further explained that traffic constables had initially attempted to stop the vehicle after witnessing its reckless movement and involvement in the pedestrian accident. When those efforts failed, the senior officer intervened, leading to the dangerous sequence of events.

Police teams have launched a search operation to trace the absconding driver. Investigators are examining available evidence, including CCTV footage from nearby locations, to establish the driver’s route and facilitate his arrest.

The incident has raised fresh concerns regarding the safety of traffic police personnel while performing their duties on busy city roads. Authorities have assured that strict legal action will be taken against the accused once he is apprehended.

The investigation into both the alleged hit-and-run involving the pedestrian and the assault on the traffic police officer is continuing.
