Tripura government has initiated the process of establishing an Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturing Unit at the Integrated AYUSH Hospital in Sabroom. The project aims to strengthen traditional healthcare, ensure a steady supply of quality Ayurvedic medicines, create employment, and boost the state’s herbal economy.
The Tripura government has initiated the process of establishing an Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturing Unit at the Integrated AYUSH Hospital in Sabroom under South Tripura district. The proposed facility is expected to ensure the uninterrupted availability of quality Ayurvedic medicines across the state while reducing dependence on supplies from outside Tripura.
The initiative marks another important step in the state’s efforts to expand its AYUSH infrastructure and enhance access to traditional systems of medicine. Besides improving healthcare delivery, the manufacturing unit is also expected to generate employment opportunities and provide fresh momentum to Tripura’s growing herbal economy.
As part of the preliminary exercise, an Expert Committee under the National AYUSH Mission (Tripura) recently conducted a detailed meeting at the office of the Branch Officer (Ayurveda) under the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) in Agartala. During the meeting, committee members examined the feasibility of the proposed project and discussed a comprehensive roadmap for establishing the manufacturing unit at the Integrated AYUSH Hospital in Sabroom.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Gourishankar Bhowmik, Branch Officer (Ayurveda), and attended by members of the Expert Committee along with senior government officials. The participants reviewed the proposed infrastructure requirements, manufacturing facilities, operational framework, regulatory compliance, and implementation strategy required for the successful execution of the project.
Officials associated with the initiative said the manufacturing unit would significantly improve the availability of standardized Ayurvedic medicines for government healthcare institutions and patients throughout the state. Producing medicines locally is expected to improve supply chain efficiency, reduce procurement delays, and ensure better quality control.
The proposed facility is also likely to create direct and indirect employment opportunities in pharmaceutical production, quality testing, packaging, logistics, and allied sectors. In addition, officials believe the project will encourage the cultivation of medicinal plants by local farmers, thereby supporting rural livelihoods while promoting sustainable agricultural practices linked to the herbal medicine sector.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of strengthening traditional healthcare systems alongside modern medical services. With increasing public interest in Ayurveda and herbal treatment, the proposed manufacturing unit is expected to play a crucial role in expanding access to safe, affordable, and standardized Ayurvedic medicines across Tripura.
The Sabroom project comes amid the state’s continued efforts to develop AYUSH infrastructure. Earlier, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced that Tripura would establish its first Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Hospital at Tepania in Gomati district. The proposal has already received approval from the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), clearing the way for the institution to begin admitting 60 students from the 2026-27 academic session.

Officials believe that the proposed Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturing Unit and the upcoming Government Ayurvedic Medical College together will significantly strengthen Tripura’s traditional healthcare ecosystem. These initiatives are expected to improve healthcare accessibility, enhance medical education, promote research in Ayurveda, encourage the cultivation of medicinal plants, and position Tripura as an emerging hub for AYUSH-based healthcare and herbal medicine production in the Northeast.
