Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha says Tripura Medical College is a key healthcare pillar, highlighting rising public trust, expanding medical education, major surgeries, OPD services and new health infrastructure across Tripura.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today said that Tripura Medical College is one of the pillars of the state’s medical infrastructure and that the trust of the general public in it is increasing day by day.
“Tripura Medical College is continuously trying to reach the level of service provision at par with the state’s main referral hospital, GBP Hospital,” he said.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said this while inaugurating the programme organised to mark the 21st Foundation Day of Tripura Medical College and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Teaching Hospital.
In the initial phase of the programme, the Chief Minister inaugurated a blood donation camp and a Nature-cum-Smart Lecture Hall in the academic building of the college.
While speaking at the event, the Chief Minister expressed nostalgic feelings towards Tripura Medical College and said that this college, which started its journey in 2005, is one of the most trusted places for medical services for the common people of the state.
He reminisced about the initial period of the hospital and presented a detailed picture of its early days to all those present.
Dr. Saha, who is also the Health Minister, said that from August 2025 to July this year, about 3 lakh 65 thousand people availed themselves of services at the OPD of Tripura Medical College. A total of 4,831 major and 18,292 minor operations have been performed at this hospital. Dialysis was provided to 2,536 people, while colonoscopy was performed on 122 people. These statistics indicate the role of this hospital in the health services of the state.
The Chief Minister said that at present, the college has 150 MBBS seats and 18 PG course seats.
“This number of seats will increase further in the coming days. A dental college has been established in the state during the current state government’s tenure. The teaching of Homeopathic and Ayurvedic Medical Colleges will also start soon,” said Dr. Saha.
He said that this government has given the highest priority to the health system.
“The number of beds in GBP Hospital has been increased, separate infrastructure has been created for the treatment of mothers and children, and free-time OPDs have been started in the main and district hospitals of the state. Agartala Civil Hospital has recently been launched. Moreover, the foundation stone for setting up a medical college in the private sector at Ambassa through the Bandhan Group has been laid. The foundation stone for setting up a tertiary eye hospital adjacent to ILS Hospital has also been laid. All these steps reflect that the state is progressing smoothly on the path to becoming a health hub in the coming days,” he said.
The Chief Minister also said that Tripura Medical College is doing significant work in the field of medicine.

Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Society for Tripura Medical College Chairman Dr. Promthesh Roy, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Swapan Saha, Principal of B. R. Ambedkar Teaching Hospital Professor (Dr.) Arindam Dutta, Professor (Dr.) A. K. Chakma, and Tripura Medical College Medical Superintendent Dr. Jayant Poddar were present.
