The first MEMU train in Northeast India was flagged off between Agartala and Karimganj, marking a milestone in Tripura’s railway modernization. The electric train enhances connectivity, supports sustainable transportation, and offers faster, eco-friendly, and comfortable travel for thousands of daily passengers.
Marking a historic milestone in the railway history of Northeast India, the first-ever Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train service in the region was officially flagged off on Saturday between Agartala in Tripura and Karimganj in Assam. The launch of Train No. 75679/75680 Agartala-Karimganj-Agartala MEMU service represents a major leap in modernizing rail transportation, following the successful electrification of railway routes across the state.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the new electric train service at Agartala Railway Station in the presence of Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, MLA Mina Rani Sarkar, senior railway officials, and several dignitaries.
The newly introduced MEMU train replaces the existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) service, ushering in a cleaner, faster, and more energy-efficient mode of transportation. Railway officials described the development as a landmark achievement for both Tripura and the Northeast, reflecting Indian Railways’ commitment to modernization and sustainable mobility.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha recalled Tripura’s railway journey, noting that the state’s first train arrived in Dharmanagar from Kalkalighat in Assam in 1964. The railway network was later extended to Kumarghat in 1990, gradually improving connectivity within the state.
The Chief Minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accelerating railway development in Tripura through the introduction of broad-gauge connectivity and several new train services over the past few years.
“Today is a historic day as Tripura receives its first electric train and the Northeast gets its first MEMU service. This is a significant achievement that reflects the rapid development of railway infrastructure in the region,” Dr. Saha said.
He further highlighted that the 12-coach MEMU train has been equipped with modern passenger amenities, including CCTV surveillance systems, ensuring improved safety, comfort, and convenience for commuters.
Speaking on the occasion, Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said that Agartala currently operates 18 train services, including 13 express trains and five DEMU services. With the introduction of the new MEMU train, passengers will enjoy enhanced travel facilities and increased carrying capacity.
According to the minister, the new train can accommodate nearly 3,600 passengers owing to its extended coach configuration, making it ideal for daily commuters, students, office-goers, traders, and tourists travelling between Tripura and southern Assam.
Chowdhury also referred to recent public protests at Jirania Railway Station demanding additional train services. He said the Chief Minister promptly communicated the matter to the Central Government, resulting in the commencement of the MEMU service.
“The state government remains committed to ensuring good governance and improving public services up to the last mile. The launch of this train reflects that commitment,” the minister said.

Meanwhile, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma described the launch as another significant milestone in the railway’s modernization drive following the rapid electrification of railway routes across the Northeast.
In an official statement, Sharma said the introduction of the first MEMU service in Tripura and the Northeast demonstrates NFR’s dedication to providing faster, cleaner, and more efficient rail transportation while promoting environmentally sustainable travel.
Unlike conventional DEMU trains that operate using diesel engines, MEMU trains run entirely on electric traction, making them environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and more economical to operate. Electric trains also offer superior acceleration and deceleration, allowing quicker movement between stations and reducing overall travel time on short-distance routes.
Railway officials further explained that MEMU services provide smoother rides, significantly lower noise levels, reduced maintenance requirements, and zero emissions at the point of operation. These advantages align with Indian Railways’ broader vision of developing a green, sustainable, and customer-friendly transportation network across the country.
The Agartala-Karimganj MEMU service is expected to greatly benefit thousands of daily passengers by offering reliable, affordable, and comfortable rail travel between Tripura and adjoining areas of Assam. Improved rail connectivity is also expected to strengthen economic and social ties between the two neighbouring states while supporting regional development.
The service is likely to facilitate easier movement of students, employees, traders, tourists, and small business owners, besides encouraging more people to choose rail transport over road travel. Better connectivity is also expected to promote commerce, tourism, and employment opportunities across the region.

As the first MEMU train service in both Tripura and the Northeast, the Agartala-Karimganj electric train marks the beginning of a new era in regional railway transportation. The initiative not only reflects the successful electrification of railway infrastructure but also reinforces Northeast Frontier Railway’s long-term vision of delivering modern, sustainable, efficient, and passenger-centric rail services that contribute to the overall socio-economic development of Northeast India.
