Tripura has been declared the Overall Best-Performing State in the Small State category under the PMFME Scheme at the PMFME Conclave 2026, recognising its efforts to promote food-processing enterprises, support grassroots entrepreneurs, strengthen livelihoods, and expand sustainable economic opportunities across the state.

Tripura has achieved a major national distinction after being declared the Overall Best-Performing State in the Small State category under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme. The recognition was conferred at the PMFME Conclave 2026, held at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on August 24 and 25.

Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Chirag Paswan presented the award to Tripura, acknowledging the state’s efforts to promote food-processing enterprises and strengthen livelihood opportunities at the grassroots level.

The national recognition highlights Tripura’s initiatives aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship among small food-processing units, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and local entrepreneurs. Through the PMFME framework, beneficiaries have received support for formalising their enterprises, improving skills and production capabilities, accessing financial assistance, and expanding their market reach.

The achievement is being viewed as an important milestone for Tripura’s food-processing and livelihood development ecosystem. The Tripura Urban Livelihood Mission (TULM) described the recognition as a “major milestone” for the state and highlighted the significance of the national conclave in bringing together stakeholders associated with food processing, entrepreneurship, livelihoods, and urban development.

The PMFME Conclave also provided an opportunity for participating stakeholders to exchange ideas and showcase successful initiatives connected with micro food-processing enterprises. Tripura’s recognition at the national platform reflects the combined contribution of government agencies, grassroots entrepreneurs, community organisations, and beneficiaries working to build a stronger food-processing ecosystem in the state.

The PMFME Scheme has played an important role in supporting the formalisation and development of micro food-processing enterprises. For small entrepreneurs and community-based organisations, such support can help improve production, strengthen business capabilities, facilitate access to financial assistance, and create better opportunities to connect with markets.

Tripura’s performance under the scheme has brought greater national visibility to its efforts to promote entrepreneurship-led livelihood development. The recognition also underlines the state’s focus on empowering communities through local enterprise, innovation, skills development, and sustainable economic activity.

Officials said the national honour is expected to provide further impetus to efforts aimed at expanding livelihood opportunities for communities across Tripura. The recognition could also encourage more micro-enterprises and grassroots entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in food processing and related activities.

The award comes at a time when strengthening micro and small enterprises is increasingly being viewed as an important component of inclusive economic development. By supporting local entrepreneurs and community-based enterprises, food processing can create avenues for value addition, employment generation, and sustainable livelihoods.

With the national honour under the PMFME Scheme, Tripura’s efforts in developing its food-processing sector have received wider recognition. The state’s achievement is being seen as a significant example of how targeted support for micro-enterprises, SHGs, and local entrepreneurs can contribute to grassroots economic development.

The recognition is expected to further strengthen Tripura’s focus on entrepreneurship and livelihood generation while encouraging stakeholders to expand the state’s food-processing ecosystem. The award also places Tripura among the states demonstrating notable progress in implementing initiatives designed to formalise and strengthen micro food-processing enterprises.
