Tripura is set to launch a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre in Agartala, enhancing advanced cancer treatment facilities. The initiative, directed by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, aims to reduce patient referrals outside the state and strengthen healthcare infrastructure.
In a major step toward strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding advanced cancer treatment facilities, the Tripura government is preparing to establish a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre in Agartala. The initiative is expected to significantly improve access to specialized cancer treatment within the state and reduce the need for patients to travel to other parts of the country for complex medical procedures.
The announcement came following an inspection visit by Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, who reviewed the facilities at the Regional Cancer Centre on Tuesday. Accompanied by senior officials, Gitte assessed the readiness of laboratories, medical equipment, and various patient care services as part of the government’s efforts to operationalize the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the earliest.
Speaking during the inspection, the Health Secretary said the state government is moving forward with the project under the guidance and directives of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who has consistently emphasized the importance of improving healthcare services and ensuring access to advanced medical treatment for the people of Tripura.
Gitte highlighted that the government is taking all necessary steps to maintain the hospital’s medical infrastructure. He noted that critical machines and equipment are being regularly serviced and repaired through manufacturer maintenance contracts to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for patients. Proper upkeep of advanced medical equipment, he said, is essential for the successful functioning of specialized treatment units such as the upcoming BMT facility.
In another significant development, the Health Secretary announced that Intensive Care Unit (ICU) services will soon be introduced at the Regional Cancer Centre. The addition of ICU facilities is expected to strengthen the institution’s capacity to manage critical and emergency cancer cases while improving overall patient outcomes.
The state government has also expanded cancer care services beyond Agartala. According to Gitte, day-care cancer treatment facilities have been introduced in three districts, enabling patients to receive essential services closer to their homes. This decentralization of healthcare services is expected to reduce travel burdens and improve treatment accessibility for residents in remote areas.
To further strengthen cancer care delivery, doctors from the Regional Cancer Centre will provide specialized training to district-level healthcare personnel. The initiative aims to enhance the skills and expertise of medical staff across Tripura, ensuring that quality cancer care services are available throughout the state.
Meanwhile, the government has developed night shelter facilities at GB Pant Hospital to support patients and their families. These facilities are expected to become operational soon, providing accommodation and convenience for those traveling long distances for treatment.
Officials stated that alongside infrastructure development, efforts are underway to address minor shortcomings in facilities while increasing manpower and technical support to meet the growing demand for cancer treatment services.
