India’s opposition politics is undergoing a major transformation ahead of Parliament’s Monsoon Session as the INDIA bloc faces fresh fractures. The Congress-DMK split, Trinamool Congress uncertainties, AAP’s declining strength, and shifting regional alliances are reshaping parliamentary dynamics, potentially strengthening the NDA’s legislative position in both Houses.

The political landscape ahead of Parliament’s upcoming Monsoon Session is witnessing a significant transformation as recent Assembly election results have altered the balance of power within the opposition camp. With the INDIA alliance facing fresh fractures, changing political loyalties, and emerging regional forces, the parliamentary dynamics in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are expected to be markedly different from previous sessions.

The Monsoon Session, likely to commence later this month, will unfold against the backdrop of growing uncertainties within the opposition ranks. The developments come at a time when the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) enjoys a comfortable majority in the Lok Sabha, allowing it to push forward key legislative initiatives with relative ease.

The INDIA alliance, formed ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as a united platform against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has experienced a series of setbacks and internal disagreements since its inception. One of the earliest indications of instability came when Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar, considered among the alliance’s principal architects, exited the grouping.

Subsequently, differences over seat-sharing arrangements during the 2024 general elections and several state polls exposed the challenges of maintaining unity among diverse regional parties. While opposition leaders attempted to project a united front, competing political ambitions and regional priorities frequently undermined coordination efforts.

A fresh setback emerged with the breakdown of the long-standing alliance between the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu. The Congress ended its 11-year partnership with the DMK and chose to align itself with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as a major force in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The election result stunned political observers, with TVK securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. The Congress decision to partner with TVK prompted the DMK to formally distance itself from the INDIA alliance. As a result, the DMK has decided to skip the upcoming INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi and will also sit separately from Congress members in the Lok Sabha during the forthcoming Parliament session.

The departure of the DMK represents a significant blow to opposition unity. The party currently holds 22 Lok Sabha seats, making it one of the largest opposition parties in Parliament. Its decision to function independently reduces the collective strength and negotiating power of the opposition benches.

At the same time, developments in West Bengal have added another layer of political complexity. The Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, suffered a major setback in the state Assembly elections as the BJP secured a sweeping victory, ending the party’s 15-year rule.

Following the electoral defeat, Mamata Banerjee has increasingly shifted her attention toward national politics. Significantly, she is expected to personally represent the Trinamool Congress at upcoming INDIA alliance discussions, a move that has generated considerable political speculation.

Observers believe the decision may be aimed at maintaining unity among the party’s parliamentarians amid growing concerns about internal dissent. The Trinamool Congress has faced mounting challenges following its loss of the Leader of the Opposition position in the West Bengal Assembly to rebel legislators.

Adding to the uncertainty are claims made by senior Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy regarding the possibility of defections within the party. According to his assertions, a number of MPs may switch political allegiance in the coming months.

The numbers have attracted particular attention. The Trinamool Congress currently has 28 MPs in the Lok Sabha. Under existing anti-defection provisions, a group of 19 MPs moving together could potentially avoid disqualification, making the situation politically sensitive for the party leadership.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), another constituent of the INDIA alliance, has seen its parliamentary influence diminish significantly. The party now has only three members in Parliament, and uncertainty remains over whether they will continue to align themselves with the broader opposition platform.

The Samajwadi Party, with 37 Lok Sabha seats, remains one of the strongest opposition voices and is expected to play a crucial role in coordinating resistance to government legislation. However, without a cohesive alliance structure, opposition parties may find it increasingly difficult to present a united strategy during debates and voting.

On the other side of the aisle, the NDA enters the Monsoon Session from a position of strength. The alliance currently commands 292 seats in the 18th Lok Sabha. Of these, the BJP accounts for 240 members, while key allies include the Telugu Desam Party with 16 seats, Janata Dal (United) with 12 seats, Shiv Sena with seven seats, and the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) with five seats.

The numbers suggest that the ruling coalition is well-positioned to navigate legislative challenges despite opposition criticism. The fragmentation of opposition ranks could further ease the passage of government bills and policy initiatives.

In the Rajya Sabha as well, evolving political alignments could alter parliamentary calculations. The BJP holds 113 seats in the Upper House, supported by allies including Janata Dal (United) and Shiv Sena. Meanwhile, the opposition’s effective strength may decline further if the DMK’s eight Rajya Sabha members choose to remain unattached rather than coordinate with the INDIA bloc.

As Parliament prepares for a crucial Monsoon Session, the opposition faces the difficult task of rebuilding cohesion amid shifting alliances, electoral setbacks, and leadership challenges. Whether the INDIA alliance can regain momentum or whether regional political interests continue to dominate opposition politics will be closely watched in the weeks ahead.

The coming session is therefore expected not only to debate important legislative matters but also to serve as a key test of the opposition’s ability to remain relevant and united in an increasingly fragmented political environment.
