Tripura launched its first-ever Higher Education Dialogue as Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman engaged student representatives to strengthen quality, skill-based, and student-centric education. The initiative aims to build modern campuses, improve policy-making, and transform Tripura into a leading higher education hub.
In a landmark initiative aimed at transforming the future of higher education in Tripura, the state government on Wednesday organised the first-ever Higher Education Dialogue at the Sonar Tori State Guest House Conference Hall in Agartala. The programme brought together student representatives from government colleges across the state and senior officials of the Higher Education Department, creating a unique platform for direct interaction between students and the government.
The historic dialogue was chaired by Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman in the presence of Director of Higher Education Animesh Debbarma and other departmental officials. The initiative marked the first time that the government formally invited student representatives to openly discuss challenges, expectations, and future strategies for strengthening higher education in Tripura.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Kishor Barman described the programme as the beginning of a new chapter in the state’s education sector. He said the objective was to establish a transparent and participatory mechanism where students could freely express their views while the government carefully considered their suggestions for future policy formulation.
The minister emphasized that quality higher education cannot be achieved solely through government schemes or infrastructure development. Instead, he said, meaningful progress requires active collaboration among students, teachers, educational institutions, and the government. According to him, collective participation and constructive dialogue are essential to creating a modern, inclusive, and student-centric higher education system.
“This is not merely a government meeting but an open platform where students will speak and the government will listen. The future roadmap of higher education in Tripura will be guided by the valuable ideas emerging from these discussions,” Barman said.
During the interactive session, student representatives highlighted several issues affecting colleges across the state. Discussions focused on improving academic quality, addressing infrastructural challenges, promoting research and innovation, expanding skill-based and employment-oriented education, and enhancing career opportunities for graduates. Participants also proposed measures to transform colleges into model educational institutions capable of producing globally competitive students.
The dialogue further explored strategies to increase enrolment in higher education by 50 percent by 2030, strengthen career-oriented academic programmes, and encourage values of responsible citizenship, patriotism, and national development among students. The minister reiterated that colleges should evolve beyond institutions awarding degrees and become centres of innovation, leadership, and nation-building in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Highlighting the importance of student leadership, Kishore Barman entrusted every student representative with a significant responsibility. He urged them to return to their respective colleges and lead initiatives to build clean, green, disciplined, ragging-free, and drug-free campuses. He also encouraged students to promote research, innovation, environmental awareness, and practical development plans tailored to their institutions.
The minister stressed that the Higher Education Dialogue was not a one-day event but the beginning of a long-term participatory movement to reshape the future of higher education in Tripura. He assured students that every constructive suggestion received during the programme would be examined seriously and incorporated into future policy decisions wherever feasible.
He further announced that similar consultation programmes involving teachers, educationists, and other stakeholders would be organised in the coming months to ensure wider participation in educational reforms. The government, he said, remains committed to making Tripura a recognised education hub by improving academic standards, promoting innovation, and creating opportunities for holistic student development.

Concluding the programme, Barman reaffirmed that the voice of students must remain the foundation of future educational reforms. He encouraged every student to take pride in their college and contribute responsibly towards building a vibrant academic culture. With the launch of the state’s first Higher Education Dialogue, Tripura has taken a significant step toward creating a more inclusive, skill-oriented, research-driven, and future-ready higher education system capable of producing skilled, creative, and socially responsible citizens.
