AGMC and GBP Hospital has launched a probe into the Resident Girls Hostel incident while strengthening CCTV coverage, security surveillance, lighting, police patrolling, and restricting illegal parking. Authorities assured zero tolerance towards security lapses and misconduct, with investigations continuing on all reported cases.
The authorities of AGMC and GBP Hospital have initiated a detailed investigation into the recent security breach at the Resident Girls (Intern) Hostel while announcing a series of measures aimed at strengthening campus safety. The decisions include expansion of CCTV coverage, enhanced security surveillance, installation of protective grills, better lighting, restrictions on illegal parking, and closer coordination with police to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Addressing a press conference, AGMC Principal Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Majumder, accompanied by Medical Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami, explained the circumstances surrounding the incident that raised serious concerns among students residing in the hostel.
According to Prof. Majumder, the incident occurred when a first-year postgraduate student was resting in her hostel room. During that time, a masked individual allegedly entered the room through a back entrance that had been left open. The intruder reportedly pushed the student from behind before fleeing with her mobile phone.
The student immediately raised an alarm, prompting fellow hostel residents and security personnel to rush to the spot. However, by the time assistance arrived, the accused had already escaped from the premises. Officials from the hostel administration and NCC Police Station also reached the location shortly after receiving information about the incident.
The Principal stated that although an investigation is actively underway, identifying the accused has become difficult because the entire hostel complex was not covered under CCTV surveillance. Available footage reportedly captured a person moving from the rear side of the hostel, but the absence of complete camera coverage has limited the scope of identification.
He further revealed that the suspect managed to gain entry because certain open spaces in the hostel lacked protective grills. Following the incident, immediate instructions were issued to the Engineering Cell to install grills in vulnerable areas of the ladies’ hostel to prevent unauthorized access.
Prof. Majumder also disclosed that a show-cause notice has been served to the private security agency responsible for safeguarding the hospital campus. The agency had earlier been instructed to conduct continuous monitoring and deploy security personnel in plain clothes for effective surveillance.
However, preliminary findings revealed that on the day of the incident, the last security round was conducted at approximately 9:45 pm. Authorities are now reviewing whether existing security protocols were adequately followed and whether additional lapses contributed to the incident.
The Principal noted that the hostel incident was not an isolated case, pointing out that several theft incidents had also been reported from different parts of the hospital campus in recent weeks. In response, hospital authorities convened a meeting with the security agency to formulate stronger surveillance strategies and improve monitoring across the entire campus.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami announced several immediate and long-term security measures. These include installing additional CCTV cameras across critical locations, reducing the number of entry and exit points to improve access control, and imposing strict restrictions on illegal parking inside the residential areas of the hospital complex.
He also appealed to hostel residents and students to remain alert and immediately report any suspicious movement or security concerns to authorities. The hospital administration has requested the police to increase patrolling around the campus. If deployment of additional personnel is not immediately feasible, police have been urged to coordinate closely with hospital security supervisors for regular surveillance.
Dr. Goswami assured that proper illumination would also be ensured throughout the hospital complex, particularly in poorly lit areas, to improve visibility and enhance overall safety during nighttime.
Referring to recent theft cases, the Medical Superintendent informed that security personnel had already detained four individuals during the current month and handed them over to the police for further legal action.
To strengthen accountability within the institution, the hospital administration has made wearing official identity cards and prescribed dress codes mandatory for all staff members. The measure is intended to help security personnel quickly identify authorized employees and detect unauthorized persons entering sensitive areas.
Responding to another media query regarding allegations of a doctor’s misbehaviour with a patient’s family member in the emergency unit, Dr. Goswami stated that a separate inquiry committee had already been constituted. The committee is currently in contact with the complainant and examining all available facts before submitting its report.
He reiterated that the hospital administration would maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards any proven misconduct or negligence. Stressing the institution’s commitment to patient care, he said emergency treatment must always receive the highest priority, adding that Supreme Court guidelines clearly emphasize that life-saving treatment cannot be delayed under any circumstances.

The hospital administration has expressed confidence that the ongoing investigations, coupled with strengthened security infrastructure and improved surveillance mechanisms, will significantly enhance safety for students, staff, patients, and visitors while restoring confidence in the campus security system. Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Kanak Chowdhury, RMO Bikas Debbarma, and other senior officials were also present during the press conference.
