Tripura’s TRESP organized an ESMP workshop in Agartala to promote sustainable infrastructure development, environmental protection, labour welfare, and socially inclusive construction practices for roads and schools under the World Bank-supported rural growth initiative.

A major initiative aimed at promoting environmentally responsible and socially inclusive infrastructure development was undertaken in Tripura on Friday as the Tripura Rural Economic Growth & Service Delivery Project (TRESP) organized a Sensitization Workshop-cum-Training on Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala.

The workshop brought together government officials, engineers, contractors, and technical experts to strengthen awareness and implementation of environmental and social safeguards in infrastructure projects, especially those related to road and school construction. The programme focused on improving coordination among stakeholders while ensuring that development activities comply with sustainability and safety standards.

Addressing the gathering, TRESP Chief Operating Officer Gajendra Verma emphasized the importance of integrating environmental and social best practices into all construction-related activities. He stated that the workshop was designed to enhance understanding of sustainable development principles and help stakeholders effectively implement environmental and social management measures in ongoing and future projects.

Project Director Subhasis Das highlighted the broader objectives of TRESP, describing it as a multi-sectoral initiative aimed at improving connectivity, educational infrastructure, and livelihood opportunities in remote and tribal-dominated regions of the state. According to him, the project includes the construction of 88 roads covering nearly 288 kilometers and 16 school buildings across 11 aspirational blocks in Tripura.

He further explained that the Environmental and Social Management Plan is a crucial component of World Bank-supported projects. The framework ensures that infrastructure development activities are carried out in a manner that minimizes environmental impact while protecting the rights, safety, and welfare of local communities and workers involved in the projects.

Experts from different departments conducted detailed technical sessions during the workshop. Discussions covered important topics such as regulatory compliance, environmental conservation, groundwater management, fire safety measures, labour welfare standards, and safe construction practices. Participants also received practical demonstrations and technical guidance aimed at improving on-ground implementation of sustainable construction methods.

Officials noted that the workshop served as an important platform for capacity building and knowledge sharing among departments and executing agencies. By strengthening awareness about environmental safeguards and social inclusion, the initiative is expected to improve the quality and long-term sustainability of infrastructure projects across the state.

The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates to participants, marking the successful completion of the training session. The initiative reflects Tripura’s growing emphasis on balancing infrastructure expansion with environmental responsibility and community welfare.
