Tripura has received a major boost in the healthcare and medical education sector as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned ₹273.46 crore for the expansion and infrastructure development of Agartala Government Medical College.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha in a a Facebook post informed that the central government had approved the fund to strengthen medical education facilities and healthcare services in the state. He said, the project marked another significant milestone in Tripura’s healthcare development journey and reflected the Centre’s continued support for the state.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda for approving the ambitious expansion project. According to him, the sanctioned amount would be utilised to enhance infrastructure, modernise academic facilities, and expand the institution’s capacity for medical training.
Under the proposed expansion plan, 100 additional MBBS seats and 83 postgraduate seats in 19 critical and speciality disciplines would be introduced from the 2026–27 academic session. The move was expected to significantly increase opportunities for medical aspirants from Tripura and the Northeast region.
With the addition of these new seats, Tripura will have a total of 550 MBBS seats and 196 postgraduate medical seats, registering a record growth in medical education capacity over the last four years. The state government stated that the expansion would not only strengthen medical education but also improve the availability of specialised healthcare professionals across the state.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to healthcare development, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said that the state administration will continue to work towards improving medical infrastructure, ensuring quality healthcare services, and creating better opportunities for students pursuing medical education in Tripura.
