Bru representatives from Mizoram submitted memorandums in Kanchanpur and Ambassa demanding separate Village Councils through delimitation, warning of intensified protests if authorities fail to recognize Bru resettlement areas before upcoming Village Committee elections in Tripura.

Fresh demands for separate Village Councils emerged from Bru resettlement areas in Tripura on Wednesday as community representatives from multiple settlement centres submitted memorandums to administrative authorities in Kanchanpur and Ambassa subdivisions.

Representatives from three Bru resettlement centres — Ashapara, Naisingpara and Khasnampara — submitted a memorandum to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kanchanpur, Ashish Biswas, seeking the formation of separate Village Councils through delimitation. The memorandum was submitted at the SDM office around 3 pm in the presence of local residents and community leaders.

The deputation was followed by a mass rally involving people from the three resettlement centres. Demonstrators raised concerns over political representation, administrative recognition and development issues in Bru-inhabited areas.

Community representatives stated that the existing administrative arrangements do not adequately represent the interests of the Bru population living in the resettlement camps. They argued that separate Village Councils are necessary to ensure proper governance, fair participation in local administration and access to development schemes.

Among the leaders who headed the delegation were R. Lal Dosanga, in-charge of Naisingpara, Bipin Kumar Reang, president of Khasnampara, and Aranjoy Reang from Ashapara. After submitting the memorandum, the leaders spoke to reporters and warned that the community would launch a larger democratic movement if their demands were ignored by the administration.

The demand for separate Village Councils also surfaced in Ambassa subdivision, where Bru representatives from Haduklau Para submitted fresh appeals ahead of the anticipated Village Committee elections in the state.

Addressing the media, members of the delegation said the Bru Settlement Camp should be officially recognised as a separate village before the upcoming Village Committee polls are conducted. According to the representatives, such recognition is essential for ensuring proper participation in the local electoral process.

The delegation alleged that Bru families have continued to face various hardships for years despite repeated appeals to the administration. They claimed that the lack of permanent administrative solutions has affected development, infrastructure and public services in the settlement areas.

Community leaders further stated that repeated requests placed before authorities had not resulted in meaningful action, forcing residents to organise themselves and intensify their campaign. They warned that stronger forms of agitation could follow if the government fails to address their demands at the earliest.
