NCB Chief Anurag Garg reviews Tripura’s anti-drug strategy, urging a network-centric crackdown on trafficking syndicates, illegal cannabis cultivation, and financial networks using technology like NATGRID, with stronger prosecution and inter-agency coordination to dismantle narcotics operations effectively.

A renewed push to curb narcotics trafficking has taken shape in Tripura following a high-level review led by Anurag Garg, Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau. The meeting, attended by senior officials of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, outlined a shift toward a more coordinated and intelligence-driven strategy aimed at dismantling organised drug networks operating in the region.

During the review, Garg emphasised that enforcement agencies must move beyond isolated seizures and arrests, focusing instead on systematically breaking the structure of trafficking syndicates. He highlighted that a network-centric approach—targeting supply chains, financial flows, and leadership hierarchies—would be more effective in delivering long-term results against narcotics operations.

Illegal cannabis cultivation, which continues to pose a major enforcement challenge in parts of Tripura, was identified as a priority area. Garg called for intensified and sustained crackdowns to eliminate cultivation hubs, stressing that such efforts must be backed by strong intelligence inputs and coordination among multiple agencies.

The Director General also directed officials to prioritise action against high-value targets, including major traffickers and kingpins who control the distribution networks. He underscored the importance of ensuring robust prosecution to secure convictions and weaken the influence of these organised groups. In this context, he recommended invoking provisions of the PITNDPS Act against repeat offenders to create a stronger legal deterrent.

Technology-driven investigations emerged as a key pillar of the strategy. Garg advocated for the increased use of NATGRID to enable comprehensive data analysis, including financial tracking of illicit transactions. By targeting the economic backbone of drug syndicates, authorities aim to disrupt operations at their core and limit their ability to regenerate.

The meeting also focused on strengthening institutional capacity within the enforcement framework. Officials were instructed to enhance the operational capabilities of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force, ensuring that it can effectively lead coordinated actions on the ground. Greater emphasis was placed on making inter-agency coordination mechanisms more result-oriented.

In particular, Garg directed that meetings under the NCORD be structured to deliver measurable outcomes, rather than remaining procedural. He also stressed the importance of leveraging State-level Joint Coordination Committee platforms to improve collaboration between law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and administrative bodies.

The review reflects a broader national strategy to tackle drug trafficking through systemic disruption rather than fragmented enforcement. By combining intelligence-sharing, technological tools, and coordinated legal action, authorities aim to build a more resilient framework capable of addressing the evolving nature of narcotics networks.

Tripura’s strategic location, bordering international routes, makes it particularly vulnerable to trafficking activities. The latest directives signal a determined effort by central and state agencies to close operational gaps and establish a unified front against the drug menace. With a sharper focus on coordination and accountability, the new approach is expected to significantly enhance the effectiveness of anti-narcotics operations in the state.
