PM Modi voices deep concern over escalating West Asia conflict following US-Israel strikes on Iran, reaffirms India’s strong commitment to peace, diplomacy, and the protection of Indian nationals amid rising Gulf tensions and security threats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed “deep concern” over the rapidly deteriorating security situation in West Asia, reiterating that India firmly stands for peace, stability, and diplomatic resolution of conflicts. His remarks came amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, triggering a wave of retaliatory actions across the Gulf region.
Addressing a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, PM Modi emphasized that India’s position on global tensions remains consistent and principled. “India’s stance on the several ongoing tensions around the world is firm. We have always called for maintaining peace and stability, and when two democracies stand together, the voice for peace becomes even stronger,” he said.
India’s Diplomatic Stand on West Asia Crisis
The Prime Minister underlined that the unfolding situation in West Asia is a matter of “deep concern” for New Delhi, particularly given the large Indian expatriate population residing in the Gulf nations. He stressed that India supports the resolution of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy rather than military confrontation.
“The current situation in West Asia is a matter of deep concern for us. India supports the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. To ensure the safety of all Indian nationals, we will continue to work closely with all countries in the region,” PM Modi stated.
India maintains strong strategic and economic ties with multiple countries in the Gulf, making regional stability crucial for energy security, trade, and the welfare of millions of Indian workers.
Escalation Following US-Israel Strikes on Iran
The latest round of hostilities reportedly began after coordinated US-Israel strikes targeted key Iranian missile and military infrastructure. The operation aimed to degrade Tehran’s strategic capabilities and reportedly resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian figures, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran launched extensive drone and missile attacks targeting US assets, allied military installations, and regional capitals across the Gulf. Missiles and drones were intercepted over Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, leading to temporary airspace closures and reported military and civilian casualties.
The intensifying confrontation has prompted counter-strikes from US forces, including naval deployments and precision operations, marking one of the most severe and sustained face-offs between Washington and Tehran in decades.
Cabinet Committee on Security Reviews Situation
Earlier on Sunday, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by PM Modi, convened an emergency meeting to review the evolving crisis. The committee was briefed on the February 28 air strikes in Iran and the subsequent escalation across the Middle East, including attacks in several Gulf countries.
According to an official statement, the CCS expressed serious concern over the safety and security of the large Indian expatriate community in the region. Discussions focused on contingency planning, diplomatic engagement, and preparedness to assist Indian nationals if the situation worsens.
Safety of Indian Nationals a Priority
India has one of the largest expatriate communities in the Gulf region, contributing significantly to remittance flows and strengthening bilateral ties. Any prolonged instability could disrupt economic activity, aviation routes, and energy supply chains, directly impacting India’s interests.
