PM Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discuss escalating West Asia tensions after US-Israel strikes on Iran. India calls for restraint, civilian safety, and immediate cessation of hostilities amid rising geopolitical instability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a crucial telephonic conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the rapidly evolving regional situation in West Asia, following heightened tensions triggered by recent military developments in the Middle East. The high-level dialogue comes at a sensitive moment marked by growing geopolitical uncertainty and international security concerns.

Sharing details of the conversation on social media platform X, PM Modi stated that he had discussed the “current regional situation” with Netanyahu and conveyed India’s concerns over recent developments. He emphasised that the safety of civilians must remain the top priority and reiterated India’s consistent position calling for an early cessation of hostilities.

The exchange between the two leaders takes place amid escalating tensions after coordinated airstrikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets. The strikes have intensified instability in the region and raised fears of broader confrontation involving multiple global and regional powers. The situation has drawn widespread international attention, with several countries urging restraint and diplomatic engagement.

India has maintained a balanced and measured approach to developments in West Asia. New Delhi has consistently advocated dialogue, de-escalation, and diplomatic channels as the only sustainable path toward restoring peace and stability. The conversation between Modi and Netanyahu is seen as part of India’s proactive diplomatic engagement in safeguarding its strategic interests while promoting regional calm.

Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level security review meeting in the national capital shortly after returning from a two-day tour of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Government sources indicated that he arrived in Delhi around 9:30 p.m. and immediately convened senior officials to assess the prevailing security scenario.

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. The urgent nature of the discussions underscored the seriousness with which the Indian government is monitoring unfolding developments in West Asia.

Observers view the rapid convening of the Cabinet Committee on Security as a direct response to the intensifying regional crisis. Reports of retaliatory actions and mounting casualties have further heightened global anxieties. While official confirmations remain limited, international media reports have suggested significant developments within Iran’s leadership structure amid the ongoing escalation.

India’s stakes in West Asia are substantial, encompassing energy security, trade, diaspora welfare, and strategic partnerships. The region hosts millions of Indian expatriates, making stability and civilian protection critical priorities for New Delhi. Any prolonged conflict could have far-reaching economic and humanitarian implications, particularly in energy markets and maritime trade routes.

The recent diplomatic engagement also builds upon the strengthening ties between India and Israel. During an earlier state visit, the two countries elevated their bilateral relationship to a Special Strategic Partnership, reinforcing cooperation across defence, technology, agriculture, cybersecurity, and innovation sectors. The leadership-level communication reflects the depth of this partnership while highlighting India’s independent foreign policy stance.

As tensions continue to simmer, India has reiterated its call for immediate de-escalation and renewed diplomatic efforts. The Modi-Netanyahu conversation signals New Delhi’s active engagement in international diplomacy at a time when global stability faces renewed tests.

With West Asia at a volatile crossroads, India’s emphasis on restraint, civilian safety, and cessation of hostilities underscores its broader commitment to peace, stability, and responsible global leadership.
