PM Modi highlights unprecedented central investment in Northeast development in a letter to Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu on Statehood Day, citing infrastructure growth, border connectivity, tourism boost, and tribal heritage preservation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the National Democratic Alliance government has ushered in a transformative era for the Northeast, with unprecedented attention, investment, and policy focus aimed at accelerating comprehensive development across the region. In a letter addressed to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on the occasion of the state’s 40th Statehood Day, the Prime Minister underlined the Centre’s sustained commitment to infrastructure expansion, border connectivity, tourism growth, and cultural preservation.

The Prime Minister emphasized that over the past decade, the government has worked “round the clock” to strengthen connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh, a strategically significant border state. He noted that thousands of kilometres of roads have been constructed, including in some of the most remote and challenging terrains. These projects, he said, symbolize a determined push to integrate the Northeast more closely with the rest of the country while improving economic prospects for local communities.

Among the landmark projects highlighted were the Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar and the Sela Tunnel, both completed during the tenure of the current government. The Prime Minister stated that the timely foundation-laying and execution of these key infrastructure projects demonstrate the Centre’s commitment to all-round connectivity and regional development.

Referring to Arunachal Pradesh’s unique geographical identity, the Prime Minister described it as the land where the sun rises first in India. He said it was fitting that a state which greets the dawn before the rest of the nation embodies radiant patriotism and unity. He also expressed admiration for the widespread greeting of “Jai Hind” among the people of Arunachal Pradesh, calling it a living affirmation of national pride.

The Prime Minister praised the state’s vibrant tribal communities, acknowledging their distinct traditions, cultural ethos, and commitment to sustainable living. He remarked that the people’s passion for environmental preservation and community-led initiatives reflects a model of balanced development rooted in tradition and responsibility.

Recalling his multiple visits to the state, the Prime Minister said he has always been deeply moved by the warmth and affection shown by the people. He mentioned the GST Bachat Utsav launched from Itanagar, where he interacted with Self Help Groups and traders. According to him, their innovative spirit and pride in local products such as rice, pickles, tea, handicrafts, carpets, and confectionery left a lasting impression. He also noted that many residents of the state are technologically adept, signaling readiness for digital transformation and entrepreneurship.

The Prime Minister highlighted the growing political representation of Arunachal Pradesh at the national level. He said that the appointment of Kiren Rijiju as the first-ever Union Cabinet Minister from the state marked a moment of pride for its people. He further pointed out that ministerial visits to Arunachal Pradesh in the last decade have exceeded those under any previous government, demonstrating enhanced engagement and governance outreach.

Addressing the issue of border development, the Prime Minister stressed that several villages in Arunachal Pradesh are located along the international frontier. He criticized the conventional mindset of labeling such settlements as “last villages,” arguing instead that they should be regarded as “first villages.” This shift in perspective, he said, led to the launch of the Vibrant Villages Programme, aimed at improving infrastructure, livelihood opportunities, and living standards in border regions.

The Prime Minister also cited the implementation of central welfare schemes such as the Ujala Scheme, PM Kisan, Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, and the Jal Jeevan Mission, stating that these initiatives have significantly improved quality of life across the state. Access to electricity, healthcare, agricultural support, and drinking water has expanded under these programs, contributing to socio-economic upliftment.

Cultural preservation and intellectual heritage were also prominent themes in the Prime Minister’s message. He expressed particular enthusiasm for the documentation and digitisation of rare manuscripts in districts such as Tawang, West Kameng, Shi-Yomi, Upper Siang, and Namsai under the Gyan Bharatam Mission. According to him, this initiative will play a crucial role in safeguarding the state’s rich spiritual and intellectual legacy for future generations.

Tourism development, especially nature and adventure tourism, was identified as another priority area. The Prime Minister stated that the government is making sustained efforts to boost tourism infrastructure and attract visitors to experience Arunachal Pradesh’s scenic beauty and cultural richness. He added that ministerial colleagues returning from the state consistently speak highly of its landscapes and hospitable communities, reinforcing the need to promote it as a premier destination.

In his concluding remarks, the Prime Minister commended the people of Arunachal Pradesh for their contributions to national progress and security. From soldiers serving on the frontlines to accomplished sportspersons, artists, entrepreneurs, and civil servants, he said the sons and daughters of the state have made immense contributions to India’s growth.
