Three Rohingya nationals were detained at Dharmanagar ISBT in Tripura after drivers alerted police over suspicious behaviour. The detainees allegedly entered India illegally and were attempting to travel to Assam. Investigation is underway.

Three Rohingya nationals were detained at the Dharmanagar Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Tripura on Wednesday after alert local vehicle drivers reported suspicious behavior to the authorities. The timely intervention by civilians and the swift response of the police helped prevent the trio from travelling further into the country without valid documents.

According to police officials, the detained individuals include two men and one woman who had arrived at the Dharmanagar ISBT and were attempting to hire a vehicle to travel towards Badarpur in Assam. Their conversations, mannerisms, and inability to provide consistent information regarding their destination reportedly raised suspicion among the drivers operating at the busy bus terminal.

Sensing something unusual, the drivers immediately informed the local police and other concerned authorities. Acting promptly on the tip-off, police personnel rushed to the ISBT and detained all three individuals for preliminary verification. They were later taken to the Dharmanagar police station for detailed questioning.

During initial interrogation, the detainees allegedly admitted that they had entered Indian territory illegally by crossing the international border. Police sources confirmed that no valid travel documents, passports, visas, or legal papers authorising their stay in India were recovered from their possession at the time of detention.

Officials said a detailed investigation is currently underway to establish the exact route used by the trio to infiltrate the country. Security agencies are also probing whether the incident is linked to a larger organised network or racket involved in facilitating illegal cross-border movement of Rohingya nationals into different parts of India.

“The interrogation is in progress, and we are verifying all possible angles, including external assistance and transit routes,” a senior police officer said. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of inter-state linkages and are coordinating with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies for further inputs.

Tripura, being a border state, remains strategically sensitive from a security perspective. Incidents of illegal infiltration continue to pose challenges for local administration and security forces. Police officials reiterated that strict vigilance is being maintained at key transit points, including bus terminals and railway stations, to prevent unauthorised movement.

Meanwhile, local residents and authorities have praised the vehicle drivers for their presence of mind and sense of responsibility. Officials stated that public cooperation plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order, especially in border regions.
