Veteran Tripura journalist and writer Biman Bihari Dhar, 84, and his grandson Rahul Pal, 27, died in a tragic head-on collision with a passenger bus in Bagma. Their deaths have sparked widespread grief across the state’s media and literary communities.

Veteran journalist, noted writer and respected teacher Biman Bihari Dhar, 84, and his 27-year-old grandson Rahul Pal were killed in a tragic road accident in Tripura’s Bagma area on Thursday. The incident has sent shockwaves across the state, leaving the media fraternity, literary circles and local community mourning the loss of two members of the same family.

According to Gomati District Superintendent of Police Arniban Das, Dhar was travelling towards the revered Mata Tripura Sundari Temple at Matabari in Udaipur with his grandson when their car collided head-on with an Agartala-bound passenger bus in the Bagma area. The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the death of the veteran journalist at the accident site.

Rahul Pal sustained critical injuries in the crash. He was rescued and rushed to Gomati District Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to treat him. However, he later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

The tragic incident has left the family and the wider community devastated, particularly because Rahul had recently secured employment with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). According to family sources, he was travelling with his grandfather to Matabari to offer prayers and share the happiness of his new career opportunity.

What should have been a meaningful family visit following a major milestone in the young man’s life instead turned into an irreparable tragedy. The deaths of both grandfather and grandson in the same accident have brought profound grief to their relatives, friends and well-wishers.

For the past few years, Dhar had been staying in Kolkata and Agartala. Despite spending time in different places, he remained associated with Tripura’s journalistic and literary circles.

News of his death spread rapidly, prompting an outpouring of condolences from colleagues, admirers and members of the literary fraternity. Many expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a veteran professional whose contributions had become part of the state’s journalistic and cultural history.
