PM Modi praised Canadian FM Anita Anand’s visit for adding “new momentum” to India–Canada relations, emphasizing cooperation in trade, technology, energy, and security. Both nations reaffirmed commitment to rebuilding bilateral trust and advancing a sustainable partnership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hailed the “new momentum” being imparted to India–Canada relations during a meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, who is on her first official visit to India. The meeting underscored the mutual intent of both nations to restore confidence, strengthen diplomatic mechanisms, and advance a broad-based partnership focused on trade, technology, energy, and people-to-people ties.

Welcoming Anand, Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism that her visit would contribute significantly to revitalizing bilateral engagement and bringing fresh energy to the India–Canada relationship. He also fondly recalled his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 Summit in June, describing it as “extremely productive.”

“Prime Minister noted the significance of enhanced cooperation between the two countries in trade, energy, technology, agriculture and people-to-people ties. Prime Minister conveyed his warm wishes to Prime Minister Mark Carney and said that he looked forward to their upcoming engagements,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in an official statement.

Following the meeting, Foreign Minister Anand posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning in New Delhi. Building on the momentum of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s meeting with PM Modi this summer at the G7 Summit, Canada and India are elevating the relationship between our countries, while maintaining our law enforcement and security dialogue and expanding our economic relationship.”

Earlier in the day, Anand held wide-ranging discussions with External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar. The two ministers reviewed progress in multiple areas of cooperation and reaffirmed the shared commitment to reinvigorate bilateral mechanisms that had slowed in recent years.

EAM Jaishankar welcomed Anand on her maiden visit as Foreign Minister, remarking that the past few months had witnessed a steady improvement in the India–Canada relationship. “We are working to restore and reinvigorate the mechanisms necessary to advance our partnership,” he said.

Referring to Prime Minister Modi’s earlier engagement with Prime Minister Carney at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Jaishankar noted that India’s approach is guided by “a positive mindset” and mutual respect. “You have heard from the Prime Minister personally about our vision of cooperation and how best to realise it,” he told Anand.

Highlighting security cooperation, Jaishankar cited the recent meeting between India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Canadian NSA Nathalie G. Drouin as “an important first step” in enhancing mutual understanding in defense and intelligence matters.

He further elaborated on a series of high-level engagements in recent weeks, including talks between senior foreign ministry officials on September 19 and discussions between trade ministers on October 11. “When we look at Canada, we see a complementary economy, another open society that values diversity and pluralism. These shared values are the basis of a sustainable and long-term cooperative framework,” Jaishankar added.

The two sides are also preparing an ambitious roadmap to expand cooperation in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, civil nuclear energy, science and technology, and agriculture. The ministers emphasized that this partnership must deliver concrete outcomes aligned with the aspirations of both nations’ citizens.

Both high commissioners from India and Canada, who recently assumed office in their respective capitals, also attended the meeting. Their presence underscored the importance of institutional engagement and diplomatic continuity in sustaining bilateral dialogue.

Concluding his remarks, Jaishankar said, “Our responsibility as foreign ministers is to shepherd the process of rebuilding our cooperation and to ensure that it delivers on the expectations of our prime ministers and the interests of our people. I look forward to doing so, working closely with you, Minister.”
