A Bangladeshi woman, her Indian husband, and two traffickers were detained near Tripura border for illegal entry. Case filed under Passport Act and IPC.

In a tale that began with love and social media but ended in detention and legal action, a 20-year-old Bangladeshi woman, her Indian husband, and two alleged human traffickers were apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) near Raghna under Dharmanagar police station in North Tripura on Thursday.

The young woman, identified as Happy Deb from Moulvibazar in Bangladesh, had come to India illegally with her infant child. Her journey back to India—undertaken without valid documents—was reportedly facilitated by two alleged traffickers. However, the BSF foiled the attempt and took all involved into custody.

Happy’s story begins in the virtual corridors of Facebook, where she met 26-year-old Krishna Chandra Deb of Baruakandi village in Dharmanagar. What started as an online friendship soon blossomed into romance. The digital bond between the two grew stronger, and in a bold move, Krishna reportedly crossed the international border to meet and marry Happy in Bangladesh.

The couple, defying geography and legal protocols, began living together in India. However, complications arose when Happy became pregnant. She returned to her parental home in Moulvibazar, Bangladesh—again without valid travel documents—to give birth to their child. For months, the couple remained separated, with Krishna in Tripura and Happy back in her hometown with their newborn.

Driven by the desire to reunite with her husband and start a new chapter of their life together in India, Happy made the perilous decision to cross the border again. This time, she carried not just emotional baggage, but also their infant child. According to BSF sources, her journey was facilitated by two individuals—identified later as Anjana Das (45) and Almas Uddin (51) of Yakubnagar—who allegedly helped the couple cross the heavily guarded Indo-Bangla border near Raghna.

However, luck ran out for the couple and their supposed helpers when BSF jawans intercepted them during the illegal crossing. All four were taken into custody and handed over to Dharmanagar police on Friday. The child, according to sources, is safe and under the care of authorities.

Dharmanagar Police’s Officer-in-Charge Sritikanta Barman confirmed the incident and stated that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Passport Act for illegal border crossing and human trafficking. “We are investigating the role of the two individuals alleged to have trafficked the woman and her child across the international border. Their statements and digital footprints will also be examined,” Barman added.

This incident sheds light on the complex web of emotions, desperation, and illicit networks that often underpin cross-border movements in border states like Tripura. While love stories across borders are not unheard of, they often carry legal and security consequences, especially when international boundaries are crossed without proper documentation.

Human trafficking remains a persistent issue in this region, often masked under the pretext of romance, marriage, or employment opportunities. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly warned against unauthorized border crossings, citing both security risks and the potential for exploitation.

Meanwhile, both Happy and Krishna are now in police custody and face uncertain futures. Whether their love story will withstand the scrutiny of law and borders remains to be seen. For now, what began as a Facebook friendship has become a case study in international law violations, raising questions about the role of social media, human trafficking, and the fragile lines that separate love from illegality.

As investigations continue, authorities are also trying to verify the citizenship status of the child, and legal counsel is being arranged for the detained individuals.
