On a somber Wednesday morning, the world tuned in as India unveiled the details of Operation Sindoor. Cameras flashed, the room hummed with quiet anticipation, and as the podium awaited its speakers, two women officers stepped forward — Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. Their presence was more than ceremonial; it was symbolic.

The decision to have women lead the briefing was deliberate and poignant. It was an embodiment of resilience — a message that in a nation where terror had ripped families apart, it would be women, often the bearers of unimaginable loss, who would stand as the voice of strength and retribution.

Operation Sindoor, named to honor the women whose husbands were brutally killed in the Pahalgam terror attack, was more than just a military campaign

Operation Sindoor, named to honor the women whose husbands were brutally killed in the Pahalgam terror attack, was more than just a military campaign. It was a tribute to the women left behind — resilient, enduring, and unbroken.

PM Modi chose the name ‘Operation Sindoor’ for India’s retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack. The name Operation Sindoor is heavy with symbolism, especially for Hindu women, who put sindoor (vermilion) on their heads after marriage. Sindoor is considered a symbol of marriage.

As the women took the stage, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri opened the briefing with a statement of intent. Then, with a calm yet firm voice, Colonel Qureshi began recounting the tragic events of April 22 — the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. Her words were precise, respectful, but filled with an undercurrent of controlled anger. She spoke of the violence that shattered families, emphasizing that India’s response was driven by a commitment to justice and deterrence.

‘Operation Sindoor was meticulously planned,’ Colonel Qureshi stated. ‘Based on credible intelligence, targets linked to cross-border terrorism were identified. No military installations in Pakistan were targeted. Our focus remained on dismantling terror infrastructure.’

She elaborated on the mission: nine terror camps were destroyed, including those in Muridke and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), sites linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. Accompanying her words, footage played on the screen — drones capturing the strikes, explosions lighting up terror camps. Each impact was a reminder of India’s resolve.

Wing Commander Vyomika Singh then took over, her voice unwavering. ‘India is prepared for any misadventure. We will not tolerate any act of terror that threatens our citizens.’ Her statement echoed the nation’s mood — resolute and unyielding.

Behind them, a montage unfolded — scenes of terror attacks that had scarred the country over the past two decades. The 2001 Parliament attack, the 2002 assault on Gujarat’s Akshardham Temple, the horror of the 2008 Mumbai carnage, and the more recent tragedies at Uri, Pulwama, and Pahalgam. Each frame spoke of loss, pain, and resilience. Over 350 civilians lost, 600 security personnel martyred, and countless families shattered. The montage ended with a stark message: ‘No more.’

The room fell silent as the footage concluded. The symbolism of Operation Sindoor grew even clearer — a vow to protect, to fight, and to honor those left behind. The presence of the two women officers was not just a demonstration of leadership but a solemn tribute to the sacrifices borne by countless women in the shadow of terrorism.

As the briefing concluded, Colonel Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh remained composed, their presence a testament to India’s unwavering spirit. Operation Sindoor was not merely a military strike; it was a statement — that the spirit of those who bear the weight of loss would not be silenced. Women, as both protectors and survivors, would stand at the forefront of the nation’s resolve.
