The Indian Army announced on Wednesday that during Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes led to the destruction of a notorious terror camp known to have trained Ajmal Kasab and David Headley. These individuals were pivotal figures in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Ajmal Kasab, a Pakistani national and member of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), actively participated in the Mumbai terror attacks, which claimed the lives of 166 people. Meanwhile, David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani-American terrorist, played a significant role in planning the attacks, collaborating with Lashkar-e-Taiba to orchestrate one of the deadliest terror incidents on Indian soil.

Precision Strikes Targeting Key Terror Facilities
During a media briefing, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi presented footage showing the precise and calculated destruction of several terror camps. Among the prominent targets was the Lashkar-e-Taiba headquarters in Muridke, located in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
Colonel Qureshi clarified that the Markaz Subhan Allah facility in Bahawalpur, serving as the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), was also targeted. She emphasized that the operation avoided any military installations, and, as per current reports, there were no civilian casualties within Pakistan.

Trigger for Operation Sindoor
The operation was initiated in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists lost their lives. Intelligence agencies traced the attack’s origins to terrorist camps located across the border. Subsequently, the Indian Armed Forces identified and struck nine terror sites: four situated in Pakistan and five within Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Masquerading Terror Camps
The Indian Air Force played a crucial role in selecting the targets based on reliable intelligence inputs. Reports suggested that terror outfits had begun disguising their camps as health centers to evade scrutiny from international monitoring agencies. Among the identified targets were camps operated by globally banned terror organizations, including Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
Key Sites and Historical Links
One of the most significant sites destroyed was the Lashkar-e-Taiba’s Muridke headquarters, a place infamously associated with both David Headley and Tahawwur Rana. Intelligence revealed that Osama bin Laden had reportedly donated Rs 10 lakh to construct a guest house within the premises, emphasizing the strategic importance of the location.
Another critical target was the Shawai Nalla camp in Muzaffarabad (PoK), a primary Lashkar-e-Taiba training site operational since 2000. This camp, capable of housing 200-250 terrorists, was instrumental in training the attackers responsible for the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
The Sarjal, Tehra Kalan camp, located in Narowal district, Pakistan, was also struck. Known as a major launchpad for Jaish-e-Mohammed, this facility operated from a health center managed by Abdul Rauf Asgar, the de facto chief of the group. Just six kilometers from the Samba sector in Jammu, this site served as a hub for cross-border tunnel excavation and drone-based arms and narcotics drops.
Additional Targets Neutralized
Operation Sindoor also targeted several other key locations, including:
-
Markaz Subhan Allah, Bahawalpur – JeM headquarters.
-
Markaz Abbas, Kotli – A facility linked to the terror network.
-
Syedna Bilal camp, Muzaffarabad – A known terror training site.
-
Markaz Taiba, Muridke – Connected to Lashkar-e-Taiba operations.
-
Markaz Ahle Hadith, Barnala – A hub for radical activities.
-
Makaz Raheel Shahid, Kotli – Linked to militant activities.
-
Mehmoona Joya, Sialkot – Identified as a strategic hideout.
Countering Evolving Terror Strategies
Sources within the security establishment indicated that the selection of these targets was rooted in thorough intelligence assessments. The primary aim was to dismantle Pakistan’s efforts to rebrand terror camps as civil establishments, a tactic reportedly intended to dodge sanctions from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
Through Operation Sindoor, the Indian Armed Forces have made a significant stride in neutralizing the infrastructure supporting cross-border terrorism, thereby sending a clear message regarding the consequences of harboring terrorist activities.
