The Northeast is set to receive an additional Vande Bharat Express train connecting Agartala in Tripura with Silchar in Assam, as announced by Rajya Sabha member and BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee. This development aims to bolster connectivity within the region and is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to prioritize the growth and infrastructure development of northeastern states.
The necessary infrastructure to operate the Vande Bharat Express between Agartala and Silchar is nearing completion, with minor finishing tasks expected to conclude within the coming months. According to officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the electrification and infrastructure work along this route are targeted for completion by December, paving the way for the new Vande Bharat service to launch shortly afterward.
Bhattacharjee, speaking at an event to inaugurate a Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PM-BJP) outlet at Agartala Railway Station, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving railway connectivity in the northeast. This announcement comes as part of a broader initiative, with Prime Minister Modi inaugurating 18 Jan Aushadhi Kendras at various railway stations across the country to ensure affordable medicines reach rural and remote areas.
NFR’s progress in electrification is notable, with over 64 percent of its network now electrified, covering 2708.52 Route Kilometres (RKM) out of the total 4260.52 RKM under its jurisdiction. The railway body aims to achieve 100 percent electrification as part of its net-zero carbon emissions goal. In the northeastern states, 1524.71 RKM of railway lines have been electrified, including major routes in Assam, Tripura, and parts of Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.
The upcoming Agartala-Silchar Vande Bharat Express will join the ranks of Assam’s first Vande Bharat train, which was inaugurated last year on May 29. Connecting Guwahati with New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, it operates six days a week and completes the journey in 5 hours and 30 minutes, significantly reducing travel time along this route.
