The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked the martyrdom day of its slain leader Shyamhari Sharma at Agartala’s Lalbahadur Chowmuhni on Wednesday, November 13. Sharma, who contested as a BJP candidate in a by-election in 1991, was brutally murdered in broad daylight. He was first shot and then hacked to death, allegedly by local political goons aiming to disrupt the election and sway results in favor of an opposing candidate.

Two other senior BJP leaders, Brajesh Chakrabarty and Rakhal Chakrabarty, were also severely injured in the attack, with Rakhal losing his leg. Despite nationwide outrage and calls for justice, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe failed to bring Sharma’s killers to trial, purportedly due to political interference. To date, no one has been held accountable for the murder, and both Brajesh and Rakhal eventually passed away without seeing justice served.

On the anniversary of his death, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, along with other party leaders like Subal Bhowmik, gathered to pay homage to Sharma. Bhattacharjee emphasized that Sharma’s sacrifice has contributed to the establishment of the BJP in Tripura, a testament to his enduring impact.
