In a significant operation, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) detained two women drug smugglers from Tripura at Malda Station on Friday. The women were apprehended during a raid on a Kolkata-bound train arriving from Assam. The duo is suspected to be part of a larger drug smuggling network.
Approximately eight kilograms of high-quality cannabis were seized from the possession of the two women, whose identities have not been disclosed by the RPF at this time. According to sources, the arrested women have confessed to originating from Tripura, the source of the cannabis consignment. The illicit substance was reportedly transported from Agartala to Assam, where it was discreetly packed in flavored tea packets.
The arrested women were purportedly tasked with carrying the consignment from Assam to Kolkata, where they were to hand it over to local agents. However, the RPF, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid on a compartment of the train upon its arrival at Malda station. During the operation, the law enforcement officials seized the flavored tea packets containing the cannabis consignment.
Investigations are underway to ascertain the names of the local agents or peddlers to whom the arrested women were supposed to deliver the illicit cargo. Authorities are working to unravel the complete network involved in this drug smuggling operation.
Meanwhile, an official from the Kolkata Police noted that during this time of the year, there is an increase in the number of narcotics consignments entering the city due to heightened demand during late-night parties that extend into the New Year. The official highlighted that such seizures are more frequent during this period, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in curbing the influx of illegal substances.
