Tripura TTAADC elections 2026 set for April 12 amid tight security, over 13,500 personnel deployed. Nearly 9.6 lakh voters to decide fate of 173 candidates in high-stakes tribal council polls across 28 constituencies.
Tripura is set to witness a crucial political exercise on Sunday as voting for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections takes place under unprecedented security arrangements. After more than a month of intense campaigning, political mobilization, and sporadic clashes, the stage is now set for nearly one million voters—predominantly from tribal communities—to decide the future of the influential council.
The TTAADC, a 30-member constitutional body comprising 28 elected representatives and two nominated members, governs nearly 70 percent of Tripura’s geographical area. Established under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in June 1985, the council plays a pivotal role in shaping the socio-economic development of tribal communities, who constitute almost one-third of the state’s 4.2 million population. Politically, it is considered the second most significant institution in the state after the Legislative Assembly.
A total of 9,62,697 voters, including 4,80,666 women, are eligible to cast their votes across 28 Assembly constituencies spread over eight districts. The electoral contest is highly competitive, with 173 candidates in the fray. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front, and the Congress represent the national political spectrum, while the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) add regional weight to the contest. Additionally, 38 Independent candidates and several smaller parties are also vying for influence.

Notably, despite being aligned at the broader political level, the BJP’s tribal allies—TMP and IPFT—are contesting the elections separately after failing to form an alliance. This has intensified the competition, especially in tribal-dominated constituencies, where voter sentiment is expected to play a decisive role.
The campaign period witnessed high-voltage political activity, including multiple rallies, grassroots outreach, and confrontations between rival party supporters. Reports indicate that more than 50 leaders and party workers were injured in clashes, particularly involving BJP and TMP cadres. Despite the tensions, all major political players have expressed confidence in securing a decisive mandate.
To ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process, the administration has deployed more than 13,500 security personnel, including Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and state forces. According to officials, 24 CAPF companies—comprising Border Security Force (BSF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)—have been stationed across all constituencies. In addition, around 12,000 personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and the state police are actively engaged in maintaining law and order.
Out of 1,257 polling stations, 311 have been identified as highly critical, 693 as vulnerable, and 253 as normal. Special security measures, including round-the-clock surveillance and joint patrols, have been implemented in sensitive areas.
In Khowai district, 88 polling booths have been placed under strict security cover, especially in border areas such as Khowai and Champahour. Security forces have intensified patrolling in regions like Lathabari, Khangrai, Radhacharan Nagar, and Kokborok Bazaar. A joint vehicular mobile unit has also been deployed along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent infiltration and ensure stability.
