Tripura TTAADC elections record over 81 percent voter turnout amid tight security and political competition. Tribal voters play decisive role as BJP, Tipra Motha, Left Front, and Congress battle for control of key autonomous council ahead of crucial results.

Tripura witnessed an impressive democratic exercise as more than 81 per cent of eligible voters participated in the high-stakes elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), underscoring the political importance of the tribal belt in shaping the state’s future.

According to officials from the State Election Commission (SEC), over 81 per cent of the 9,62,697 registered voters had cast their ballots by the end of polling at 4 p.m. The turnout figure is expected to increase marginally once final reports from all 1,257 polling stations across eight districts are compiled.

The elections were conducted across all districts of Tripura to elect 28 members to the 30-seat council, with the remaining two members to be nominated by the state government. The TTAADC administers nearly 70 per cent of the state’s 10,491 square kilometres of geographical area, making it one of the most influential constitutional bodies in the region, second only to the state Legislative Assembly.

Polling began at 7 a.m., and large numbers of tribal voters, including women in traditional attire, were seen lining up outside booths early in the morning. In several polling stations, voting continued beyond the scheduled closing time due to heavy voter turnout, reflecting high public enthusiasm despite recent political tensions.

While the overall polling process remained largely peaceful, minor incidents of violence were reported from a few areas. A senior police official confirmed that small-scale clashes between rival political groups occurred in Khowai, Sepahijala, and South Tripura districts, leaving around 10 party workers injured. However, authorities emphasized that these incidents did not significantly disrupt the voting process.

The elections followed an intense and prolonged campaign period lasting nearly one and a half months. The campaign witnessed heated exchanges and occasional clashes, particularly between supporters of major political parties, resulting in injuries to more than 50 leaders and workers across different districts.

The electoral contest features a multi-cornered fight involving major national and regional political players. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front, and the Congress are competing alongside influential regional forces such as the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT). Several independent candidates and smaller parties are also contesting.

Out of the 28 constituencies, the BJP, TMP, and the Left Front have fielded candidates in all seats, while the Congress is contesting in 27 constituencies and the IPFT in 24. In total, 173 candidates, including eight women, are vying for positions in the council.

Notably, the BJP’s tribal allies — TMP and IPFT — are contesting the elections separately after failing to reach a pre-poll alliance agreement. This has added a new dimension to the electoral dynamics, making the contest more competitive and unpredictable.

To ensure smooth and secure polling, authorities deployed extensive security arrangements across the state. Tripura Director General of Police Anurag confirmed that over 13,500 security personnel were stationed across polling areas. This included 24 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), comprising around 1,500 personnel, along with approximately 12,000 personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and the state police.

Out of the total polling stations, 311 were categorized as highly critical, 693 as vulnerable, and 253 as normal. Security forces maintained strict vigilance to prevent any untoward incidents, ensuring that voters could exercise their democratic rights without fear.

The TTAADC, established in June 1985 under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, plays a vital role in promoting the socio-economic development of tribal communities. These communities constitute nearly one-third of Tripura’s population of approximately 4.2 million people and hold significant influence in the state’s political landscape.

Since 2021, the Tipra Motha Party has been governing the council, further elevating the importance of this election in determining the future political trajectory of the tribal regions.

Leaders from all major political parties have expressed confidence in securing victory, setting the stage for a closely contested outcome. The results of the TTAADC elections are scheduled to be announced on April 17, and they are expected to have far-reaching implications for Tripura’s political alignment ahead of future state-level contests.
