The Tripura High Court granted anticipatory bail to five individuals accused of abetting the suicide of BJP leader Rahul Kishore Roy. The court’s decision comes amid an ongoing investigation into the high-profile case filed by Roy’s wife, who alleged harassment and intimidation leading to his tragic death.
The Tripura High Court has granted anticipatory bail to five individuals accused of abetting the suicide of BJP leader Rahul Kishore Roy, a case that has attracted significant public and political attention in the state.
The vacation bench of the High Court, headed by Justice Biswajit Palit, on Monday allowed the anticipatory bail applications filed by Manoj Purakayastha, Pranbal Kanti Dey, Hirak Jyoti Nath, Saroj Deb, and Abhijit Das. The accused had approached the court seeking protection from arrest in connection with the case registered following the death of the young BJP leader.
Advocate Sankar Lodh, who represented the accused persons before the court, confirmed the development. According to him, the matter was heard on June 11, and after considering the submissions made by both parties, the court decided to grant pre-arrest bail to the applicants.
“The hearing on the matter was conducted on June 11, and on Monday the High Court allowed our application,” Lodh said.
The case relates to the death of Rahul Kishore Roy, a BJP leader from Dharmanagar, whose body was found at his residence a day after the results of the by-election in the local Assembly constituency were announced. The timing of the incident drew widespread attention across Tripura, especially as the BJP had secured victory in the by-election through candidate Jahar Chakraborty.
Following Roy’s death, his wife, Ananya Bhattacharjee, lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against several individuals, including the five persons who have now been granted anticipatory bail by the High Court.
In her complaint, Bhattacharjee alleged that the accused were responsible for creating circumstances that led her husband to take the extreme step. She claimed that on the day the by-election results were declared, the accused visited their residence twice.
According to the FIR, during their first visit, the accused allegedly threatened family members and demanded information regarding Roy’s whereabouts while he was away from home. The complaint further states that the group returned to the residence around 1:30 am and allegedly misbehaved with family members.
Bhattacharjee alleged that the accused shouted abusive remarks directed at Roy, causing him severe mental distress. She claimed that the alleged harassment and humiliation ultimately pushed him toward suicide.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing. Police have been examining the allegations contained in the FIR, and reports indicate that one person has already been arrested in connection with the matter.
