Tripura Legislative Assembly Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy narrowly escaped a major road accident on Monday morning while traveling from Agartala to Teliamura. The incident occurred along the Baramura Hills stretch, a route often known for its sharp bends and heavy vehicular movement.
According to reports, Kalyani Saha Roy was on her way to Teliamura when her convoy encountered a speeding Bolero pickup van coming from the opposite direction. Witnesses and officials said the vehicle was being driven recklessly and allegedly attempted to move directly toward the convoy, creating a dangerous situation on the busy roadway.
The alertness and quick reflexes of the convoy driver prevented what could have been a devastating head-on collision. However, despite the evasive action, the Bolero pickup later crashed into the vehicle carrying the Chief Whip. The impact caused partial damage to the MLA’s vehicle and left those inside shaken.
Sources said the driver of Kalyani Saha Roy’s vehicle sustained injuries in the collision and was provided medical attention. The Chief Whip herself suffered minor injuries but was reported to be safe and in stable condition. Two personal security guards accompanying her in the vehicle escaped unharmed.
Soon after the accident, personnel from Champaknagar Outpost rushed to the scene and initiated necessary procedures. Police seized the Bolero pickup van involved in the collision and transported it to the police station for further investigation. Authorities have begun examining the circumstances that led to the accident and are expected to take appropriate legal action based on the findings.
The road mishap has once again highlighted concerns over reckless driving on the Baramura Hills route. Local residents have frequently raised issues regarding speeding vehicles, dangerous overtaking, and inadequate adherence to traffic regulations along the stretch. Many residents noted that the consequences could have been far more severe had the convoy driver not reacted swiftly.
Political observers and local citizens expressed relief that the Chief Whip escaped without serious injuries. The incident also sparked discussions about road safety measures and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules on highways across the state.
