Tripura police arrested Agartala-based content creator and mobile shop owner Aditya Das on rape charges after a tribal woman alleged he lured her with an expensive iPhone promise and sexually assaulted her in a hotel near Badharghat Railway Station.
A major criminal case involving allegations of sexual assault, intimidation, and exploitation through social media has emerged in Tripura after police arrested an Agartala-based content creator and mobile phone shop owner on charges of rape.
The accused, identified as Aditya Das, was arrested late Saturday night by police following a written complaint lodged by a young tribal woman. According to investigators, the accused allegedly lured the woman with the promise of gifting her an expensive iPhone before sexually assaulting her at a hotel near Badharghat Railway Station in Agartala.
Police sources said the accused is locally known as a social media content creator and businessman who owns two mobile phone shops in Agartala. One of the stores is located at Siddhi Ashram, while another operates near the Laxminarayan Bari area of the city.
According to the complaint filed by the survivor, she came into contact with Aditya Das through Facebook several months ago. Their online communication reportedly developed gradually into regular conversations. Investigators said the accused allegedly took advantage of the growing acquaintance and persuaded the woman to meet him in Agartala by promising her a costly iPhone.
As per police sources, the woman arrived in Agartala by train on Saturday morning to purchase medicines. She alleged that upon reaching Badharghat Railway Station, the accused arrived on a motorcycle and met her there.
Although he initially claimed they would travel elsewhere, the accused allegedly took the woman to a three-storey hotel situated near the railway station. Inside the hotel room, the complainant alleged that she was forcibly raped.
The victim further stated in her complaint that when she resisted the assault, the accused physically attacked her. She also alleged that before leaving the hotel premises, Aditya Das took possession of her mobile phone and threatened her with severe consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
Despite the alleged intimidation, the woman managed to escape from the hotel and later approached the West Agartala Women Police Station, where she lodged a written complaint detailing the incident.
Acting swiftly after receiving the complaint, a police team led by Inspector Shiuli Das, Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Women Police Station, launched a late-night operation to locate the accused. Police conducted a raid at his mobile phone shop near Laxminarayan Bari on Saturday night.
During the operation, Aditya Das was detained from the shop and subsequently handed over to Amtali Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Police sources revealed that the accused is originally from Kamalpur in Dhalai district and was residing at Gangail Road in Agartala. Investigators also stated that he is married and has children.
Officials further alleged that after being taken into custody, the accused attempted to influence the situation by referring to his alleged connections and influence. However, police continued legal procedures and formally arrested him around 2 am.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Inspector Paritosh Das confirmed the arrest and stated that the accused had been produced before the court later in the day.
A case has been registered at Amtali Police Station under Sections 65(1) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will be taken based on evidence, witness statements, and findings collected during the inquiry.
