The state government has achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to provide clean drinking water to rural households through the “Atal Jaldhara Mission.” Launched on November 28, 2018, this ambitious project aimed to ensure that every household in the state had access to free piped drinking water. The mission was designed to address the critical need for clean and safe water in rural areas, improving the overall quality of life for residents.
The success of the Atal Jaldhara Mission is even more noteworthy when viewed in conjunction with the Central Government’s Jal Jeevan Mission, which was launched on August 15, 2019. The Jal Jeevan Mission seeks to extend similar benefits across rural India, ensuring that all rural households have access to piped drinking water by 2024. The Atal Jaldhara Mission has since been aligned with this national initiative, working in tandem to achieve the shared goal of universal access to clean water.
When the Atal Jaldhara Mission was first announced, the situation in rural Tripura was dire, with only 19,251 households having access to piped drinking water. However, as of August 11, 2024, this number has seen a remarkable increase, with 6,18,863 households now benefiting from the program. This dramatic improvement reflects the state government’s dedication to expanding infrastructure and ensuring that even the most remote areas have access to essential resources.
In the first 11 days of August alone, an additional 1,810 households across various districts received piped water connections. The breakdown of these new connections includes 86 in North Tripura, 215 in West Tripura, 43 in Unakoti, 349 in Sepahijala, 268 in Dhalai, 171 in Gomati, 383 in Khowai, and 295 in South Tripura. These numbers highlight the ongoing and widespread efforts to reach every corner of the state.
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, in an official statement, emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for rural residents by providing better access to essential resources like clean drinking water. The success of the Atal Jaldhara Mission stands as a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between state and central governments, working towards the common goal of enhancing living conditions in rural areas.
