Repeated incidents of vandalism across the Jampui Hills in North Tripura have triggered serious concern among local residents, with growing suspicion that the acts were carried out with deliberate and malicious intent rather than by unruly tourists.
According to local sources, unidentified miscreants vandalized key public signboards at multiple locations within a span of less than 48 hours. The first incident involved damage to the signboard of the Mizo Convention at Monpui village, located under the Jampui Hill block. The act went unnoticed until villagers discovered the destruction and raised the alarm.
Barely hours after the first incident, another act of vandalism was reported on Tuesday night from Tlaksi village. This time, the entry gate signboard of a popular paragliding site—a major tourist attraction in the region—was targeted. The close timing and similar pattern of damage have intensified fears of a coordinated and pre-planned operation.
Initially, many residents suspected that unruly tourists or outsiders visiting Jampui Hills could have been responsible for the first act of vandalism. This assumption led to widespread outrage on social media, opinionated posts, and sharp criticism of unchecked tourism. However, the second incident significantly altered public perception.
With the recurrence of vandalism at culturally and economically significant locations, locals now believe that tourists are unlikely to be involved.
