Repeated vandalism in Tripura’s Jampui Hills sparks tension as locals suspect malicious intent rather than tourist involvement. Back-to-back attacks on community and tourism signboards prompt security demands and calls for immediate police action.
Repeated incidents of vandalism across the Jampui Hills in North Tripura have triggered serious concern among local residents, with growing suspicion that the acts were carried out with deliberate and malicious intent rather than by unruly tourists.
According to local sources, unidentified miscreants vandalized key public signboards at multiple locations within a span of less than 48 hours. The first incident involved damage to the signboard of the Mizo Convention at Monpui village, located under the Jampui Hill block. The act went unnoticed until villagers discovered the destruction and raised the alarm.
Barely hours after the first incident, another act of vandalism was reported on Tuesday night from Tlaksi village. This time, the entry gate signboard of a popular paragliding site—a major tourist attraction in the region—was targeted. The close timing and similar pattern of damage have intensified fears of a coordinated and pre-planned operation.
Initially, many residents suspected that unruly tourists or outsiders visiting Jampui Hills could have been responsible for the first act of vandalism. This assumption led to widespread outrage on social media, opinionated posts, and sharp criticism of unchecked tourism. However, the second incident significantly altered public perception.
With the recurrence of vandalism at culturally and economically significant locations, locals now believe that tourists are unlikely to be involved. Community leaders argue that while careless visitors may litter public spaces or cause minor damage, they rarely target community signboards or carry out large-scale destruction of property. The nature of the attacks suggests a deeper motive aimed at creating unrest or damaging communal harmony.
The back-to-back incidents have created an atmosphere of tension and unease throughout the Jampui Hills. Residents fear that continued vandalism could harm the region’s reputation as a peaceful tourist destination, especially during the winter season when visitor numbers peak.
Villagers across affected areas have demanded stringent security measures to prevent further incidents. The safety and security of Jampui Hills are considered crucial not only for residents but also for sustaining tourism, which forms a significant part of the local economy.

It has been learned that villagers are planning to submit a deputation at the Vangmun Police Station, urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take immediate action against those responsible. Community members are also organizing local vigilance efforts to monitor suspicious movements and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Residents have appealed to law enforcement agencies to act swiftly, warning that failure to identify and apprehend the perpetrators could further destabilize the region and erode public confidence.
